Americans talk about democracy like its sacred. In public discourse, the more democratic American government is, the better. The people are supposed to rule.
But thats not the premise that underlies Americas political system. Most of the men who founded the United States feared unfettered majority rule. James Madison wrote in Federalist 10 that systems of government based upon pure democracy
have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property. John Adams wrote in 1814 that, Democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts and murders itself.

LOL!
it was meant to stop states like NY and California from imposing unpopular cheating frauds like Hillary on the entire nation
——with money from other nations & George Soros
Peter has it backwards, it was meant to stop criminals like Hillary.
I thank God every day that He guided the framing of the Declaration and the Constitution.
In 2008 and again in 2012, it did not even stop the Constitutionally ineligible Obama.
Ding ding ding!
We have a winner!
Thank you for bringing out our REPUBLIC!
Wrong, one important role, which was disgracefully abandoned with Obozo is to stop Constitutionally unqualified fraud artists from entering the WH.

the courts did nothing..
let alone the media, the historical overseer of the govt and its doings, actually COMPLIED with the govt in all things....
imagine running a scam like the toon foundation while in office, selling secrets, business, access, military intervention all to gather in millions for personal use....
Imelda Marcos was a piker compared to these arrogant elites...
Yep... Hillary won the popular vote (allegedly), but thank goodness the Electoral College worked as designed and stopped the coronation of the most corrupt politician who has ever lived.
I’m sure crooked dems were stuffing ballot boxes with dead peoples names over a hundred years ago..Founding fathers knew it would happen...
Used to be you had to be smart to write for the Atlantic
The founders were quite explicit they at the time did not want the principalities of New York or Boston or Charleston or Baltimore or Philadelphia to control the nation
Hence the electoral college
It may have been their most astute appraisal and measure
No, the States are supposed to rule.
No Petey you dope it was meant to keep criminal like your godess out of our White House.
Exactly. CA+NY. HILLARY +5 m. Everywhere else, 48 states, TRUMP +3 m
He doesn’t understand what he speaks of.
We’ve shifted more to a pure democracy despite the warnings of the Founders. His belief that the electoral college was supposed to overturn the vote isn’t correct. The popular vote was never meant to count. The president was meant to be selected by the states. As such, Trump would be the winner.
IF...the leftards were to somehow be successful in denying Trump the Presidency....what do y’all think will happen?
Peter the Gay is pretty dumb with this lie......everyone knows it’s the opposite!
No, precious. The Electoral College was quite clearly meant to keep anyone, even a woman and I do use that term loosely, like Hillary Clinton from being President. The evidence is staring you right in the face and you just can't admit it, can you?
I think he knows full well the difference, but like most liberal argues, he counts on his readers not to know or care.
I say he did it on purpose.
all these posts about what the electoral college was intended to do are wrong
at the time electoral systems across the states were inconsistent. many states did not use the popular vote for many years but rather had their state legislatures pick electors.
the EC simply allowed all states to participate, allowing each state to choose its own method of selecting electors in time for the deadline of when electors were required to cast their votes.
it preserved the Connecticut compromise of balancing large and small states by apportioning electors based on senate plus house membership.
and of course it had to be amended to separate the votes for president and vice president when that flaw was revealed in the 1800 election
but it wasn’t intended to be anything more than a practical solution to varying election standards and methodologies across the states
