Pence confirms Romney is 'under active and serious consideration' to be Trump's secretary of state

Vice President-elect Mike Pence confirmed Sunday that Mitt Romney is in the running to be Donald Trump's secretary of state.

'I can say that Governor Romney is under active and serious consideration to serve as secretary of state of the United States,' Pence told CBS News' John Dickerson on 'Face the Nation' Sunday.

President-elect Donald Trump and Romney, the GOP's 2012 nominee, seemed to bury the hatchet at a meeting yesterday in New Jersey, after Romney called Trump a 'fraud' and a 'phony' during the Republican primary this spring and Trump had referred to Romney as a loser and a 'choker.'

Pence said Trump was 'very grateful' that Romney came to Saturday's meeting.

'We spent the better part of an hour together with him,' he said. 'And then I know that the two of them actually had some private time together.'

'I would tell you that it was not only a cordial meeting, but also it was a very substantive meeting,' Pence revealed....

Lincoln, Nixon and Reagan weren't always "friends" with their cabinet members either.

doesn’t Romney see Russia as an enemy?

I don’t like it, but Trump makes good decisions. If he chooses Romney, I am going to assume that Trump has decided it is best for the country. And he will have him on a short leash.

Doesn't matter. Romney will be the voice for President Trump on all foreign policy matters.

And he'll have to call him "Mr. President" as well.

Just love Pence as his vp pick and as an elegant spokesperson.

The difference between the Dems and the Republicans.

The Dems have no one....Obama pretty much ruined all their careers.

why would Trump need to take on a high maintenance Secretary of State?

Especially one who was extraordinarily disrespectful, disloyal and scheming and complicit with those who ran nude photos of Trumps wife during the Utah primary

Make him the Ambassador to France or Poland or something but not the Secretary of State

Romney isn’t fit to wash Trumps car.

Romney would have been perfectly at home in Hillary Clinton's cabinet. This has all the makings of a disaster - an unforced disaster. There is no pressure on Trump to appoint a sworn enemy of his agenda to his cabinet. There is no incentive for Romney to toe Trump's foreign policy line as Secretary of State - he will protect the Foggy Bottom bureaucrats who have defied Republican presidents for years and garner praise from the Washington news media by "standing up to Trump" until Trump is forced to fire him.

I doubt Romney will make it through Trump's first term, and there's no telling how much division and chaos he will cause in US foreign policy before he is canned.

I'm not sure that I'd be happy with this, but ...

All politics aside, Romney would probably command a lot of respect from foreign leaders in a way that many other candidates for this position would not.

“...he will have him on a short leash.”

Like a dog. When Trump goes out, he could put Romney in a carrier on the roof.

I don’t imagine that he does. On the bright side, Trump has shown that he is quick to pull the plug on people who are not working out.

No thanks. Mitt might be a useful candidate for overseeing the dismantling of the Federal Reserve, though.

I like him for Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Romney’s got a good business mind and could tear that place up and rebuild.

Since Romney has obviously gone down on his knees and kissed the ring, he will reconsider his position of Russia being America’s no 1 geopolitical enemy.

What’s better for Trump, Romney on the sidelines questioning every move the administration makes, or Romney on the inside as part of the administration? I’ll bet Trump sees this as a way to silence a critic, just like Obama did with Hillary.
