What an idiot! Just becuase you abolish the Electoral College does not mean the popular vote automatically becomes the law of the land and anyone with half a brain can figure out what an enormous nightmare will happen should there ever need to be a national recount of a close election - it would take months, at the minimum, to recount them all.
Further, electing based on popular vote means a hacker or frauder need only corrupt the system once to steal the election rather than having to do a series of states that would buffer, to some extent, any attempts at hijacking the election.

If you want to scrap the EC, let’s give every county or parish one vote and then count those votes. What could be more fair?

On that account, I’m hearing now that the counting of the votes is nearing completion, including counting the military votes, that it now appears Trump has won the popular vote as well.

I do know who G.K. Chesterton is but am not aware of his views on the electoral college or whether you refer to some other Chesterton, a person and place, and how this fence, physical, metaphorical, or legal, relates to the electoral college.
Since I and others do not want to be as uninformed as Mr. Holder, the hero of Ruby Ridge and Waco, please share the information needed to resolve the question posed by your statement (and its assumption that this is commonly known information...)
I wonder, if there was no electoral college wouldn’t Trump have campaigned differently? Would he not have sought to mine votes even in places like California where republican turnout has to be depressed by the knowing certainty that the state is going blue under the current system?
Never fear folks, if the popular vote was the way things worked and Trump had won it (as he still might given that 7% or so of the popular vote remains uncounted) you can bet the Dems would clamour loudly for a return to the electoral college.
