Outgoing Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., is at the top of President-elect Trump's list for secretary of defense, according to a Washington Post report published Friday evening.
Other candidates up for the Pentagon chief slot are retired Army Lt. Gen. Joseph "Keith" Kellogg, former Defense Intelligence Agency director Gen. Mike Flynn and Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions.

Sources said Ayotte's neoconservative background would help her serve as a liaison between the GOP establishment in Congress and Trump administration. She would also be the first woman to oversee the Defense Department.
Why do I doubt these sources?

I think Trump is just screwing with the media now...and/or possibly suggesting a few wild ideas in private just to identify any potential leakers in his inner circle.
It’s a disinfo/psyops trick and would be a countermeasure readiy suggested by an old intel hand like Flynn, and probably a negotiation tactic previously used by Trump.
An old Romney campaign aide was publicly pushing Ayotte for some high position as a move toward party unity.
Bwahaha! (There is some bureaucrat job she can have somewhere, I am sure—but nowhere near where she could do damage or would be perceived as rewarded.)
No way he picks her. He has been making wise decisions ....this is not one.
Her never Trump position cost her her Senate Seat because it surpassed her own vote turnout so she lost by a narrow enough margin that the lost votes cost her the election
Do we really want to put a woman who is bad at strategy that she shot her own Senate election campaign right between the eyes in charge of our strategy for national defense
Her campaign was a one woman Blue On Blue self fratricide operation that hurt Trump, the Republican Party and killed her Senate career.
She needs to spend more time with her family.
