The Boston-based footwear maker has opposed the Trans-Pacific free trade agreement; rival Nike supports it
New Balance Athletic Inc. may be the first corporation to get hit by backlash against President-elect Donald Trump. The privately held sneaker companylong an opponent of the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreementwelcomed the election of Mr. Trump as a reprieve from the policies of President Barack Obama. The Obama administration turned a deaf ear to us and frankly, with President-elect Trump, we feel things are going to move in the right direction, Matthew LeBretton, New Balances vice president of public affairs, said in an interview on Wednesday.
The comments sparked controversy on social media, with hundreds of users posting on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram that they would throw out their sneakers or boycott the brand. Some posted videos setting their shoes on fire. Others uploaded photos of the shoes in the garbage.
I back your stance on the TPP but to support a hate monger like Donald Trump is disheartening, wrote Instagram user inasentimentalmood on the New Balance account. I believe Ive bought my last pair. The comments were posted beneath a statement by New Balance that the company believes in acting with the utmost integrity and we welcome all walks of life.

Time to go shopping!
Long live New Balance!
Bought 2 new pair on Election Day, actually!
So now an American company can’t express appreciation to POTUS? Huh?
I will check on their other public policies - but sounds like I might be moving to NB also. Have always heard good things about their shoes anyway.
He’ll probably recant before you can lace up a pair.
They’ll have my business.
Loved that.
I think John Henry at all are Hillary, but all credit to New Balance.
Fighting for American jobs.
Well, I just may have to buy a pair or two. Or more.
Anyone who has wide feet should check out New Balance. I have a hard time with shoes but NB will sometimes fit me even without finding the “W” size.
This is nothing but a small bunch of shrill liberals trying to look big and intimidate a company into being a good little lib. I hope New Balance has the guts to tell them to go get bent. Sorry to say, most of them want to avoid making waves and go along with their crap.
NB makes great shoes .. now with even more reason to buy ‘em, folks !
I have 2 pairs of NBs. I will buy more. They don’t fall apart so quickly like some others.
My next pair of shoes will be made by New Balance.
“Anyone who has wide feet should check out New Balance.”
That would be me. I’ve always had problems finding shoes that are wide enough.
I’m going to buy 4 pairs tomorrow.
True. Another reason I get them is because they have the wides. My whole family has wide feet.
On the contrary, New Balance now has a new customer. Even if they ARE in, ugh, Boston. :)
If you have a DSW location near you ..you can order online and return to store. They carry some W in womens. Probably men too.
A statement from their website. I think they are the only sneaker company producing any of their shoes in the USA. I buy NB and have never bought a Nike product because they are the corporation that started the rush of sneaker companies to move production to cheap labor nations.
These Trump haters are really suffering from some pretty serious mental disorders.
