Infections from these three sexually spread diseases have hit another record high in the U.S.
Chlamydia was the most common. More than 1.5 million cases were reported in the U.S. last year, up 6 per cent from the year before.
Nearly 400,000 gonorrhea cases were reported, up 13 per cent.
And there were about 24,000 cases of the most contagious forms of syphilis, up 19 per cent.
[snip]
An estimated 20 million cases of sexually transmitted infections occur each year in the U.S.
The worrying new figures come amid fears sexually-transmitted diseases could soon become untreatable as infections build a resistance to antibiotics.
Last month, the WHO updated its guidelines on how to treat chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis for the first time since 2003.
Together, the diseases infect 200 million people every year.
They are normally treated with a short and simple dose of antibiotics. But at the rate the diseases are developing, it is just a matter of years before this method becomes ineffective.
Crucially, doctors must stop over-prescribing antibiotics, and patients must be vigilant about taking the correct doses.
'Resistance of these STIs to the effect of antibiotics has increased rapidly in recent years and has reduced treatment options,' the UN agency said.
Antibiotic resistance also exists in chlamydia and syphilis, though it is less common.
The CDC recommends treating the infection with a combination of two antibiotics: azithromycin and ceftriaxone.
The infection has already become immune to penicillin, tetracycline and fluoroquinolones.
Increasingly, gonorrhea is building up a resistance to the individual drugs.
When left undiagnosed and untreated, the three diseases can have serious consequences, causing pelvic infamatory disease and ectopic pregnancy in women, and increasing the chances of miscarriage, stillbirth and newborn death.
It can infect the genitals, rectum, and throat.

That's it.
