Donald Trump: I Will Push Term Limits to Tell Congress 'You're Fired'
NBC News ^ | Oct 18 2016, 9:03 PM ET | Ali Vitali

Donald Trump’s Washington is shaping up to look a lot like a boardroom scene from “The Apprentice.”

The GOP nominee on Tuesday told supporters here that he plans to tell the entrenched guard of Congress “you’re fired,” continuing his ethics reform push by advocating for term limits on members of Congress that would further “drain the swamp” in Washington, D.C. […]

Trump at a rally later said his proposal would limit House members to 6 years (3 terms) and Senate members to 12 years (2 terms). …

Firing massive numbers in the federal bureaucracy so big it counts as a fourth, UN-elected branch of government is even more important.

He can push for an amendment to do this if he is elected. I frankly can’t think of many better uses of his time, but that is just me. This is an issue that resonates with many people of both parties.

I think most people are sick of D.C. and the insiders who are running the country into the ground, but this is a self-created distraction and he is already dealing with many.

This is an issue where he could say that it might be time for the voters to consider term limits and just move on. This is the kind of thing the media fixates on because it helps them to ignore his stance on issues. He wins on issues and that is our safest bet to retire the Clintons once and for all. Immigration, jobs, security, school choice, energy, repealing Obamacare, and appointing good judges. Add in a healthy dose of reversing our debt and deficit spending (remember the TEA party?) and he can win this thing!

His scripted speeches and policy statements have been brilliant in the last two months, but the corrupt media bastards don’t cover it because they are breathlessly covering the noise. I know much of this is not his fault (it is by their design), but he should not make their plan to filibuster on distractions easier.

He can’t do this....

It does not matter that Trump cannot do this. It still needs to be done. He certainly can point out the way. Many others will need to help.

It will take a Constitutional Amendment to make it happen.

Or the next World War, and the American Civil War that follows it.

Did you look at the source of this misleading story???
Earlier today, Trump said he would push for a Constitutional Convention to work toward term limits...

NBC just bastardized his original comments, naturally...

I agree with Trump 100% that these things are all necessary.

But the reality is that Congress will never pass such legislation, let along keep it in force going forward.

Imagine if there had been a system where the Mafia had to vote itself out of existence in order to be taken down, and you’ll see the problem with what Trump is proposing.

Moreovere, it will actually require a Constitutional amendment to make it unassailable law. The president has no role in amending the Constitution other then the bully pulpit, and getting such an amendment passed without the support of Congress will be a very difficult if not impossible task.

Without Congress, it would take 2/3rds of the states to ratify...That is possible....

I am all for term limits - have felt that way for a very long time although I am not convinced it will fix too much because we will probably see the same revolving door between congress and K street that we do at Treasury and Wall Street.

See my prior post - he needs to hammer down on what got him to this point in the last three weeks. Brief and pointed defense against the attacks, select the best shots to make on her, and stick to the message he can win on.

There is time later for the rest of this stuff. I might be wrong, but I am watching closely and I think he needs to focus on the stuff that got him here for the LIV’s who may not have been paying much attention or the mythical undecideds if they really exist.

The only way for force Congress to pass something against their own personal interests is for Trump to take it directly to the people, like Reagan did, then their constituents can pitch a fit to their various representatives.

Trump, you had me at “hello”. When did the cycle people in Congress after no more than two terms so they stay close to American citizens.

Be that as it may, the electorate continues to vote the same crooked, congress critters into office, term after term. They will never vote for term limits for themselves. Not now, nor ever, and never pass an amendment to do it either. They get real greedy once they get elected. It isn’t the marble floors that turns their head when they get to Washington = it’s the greenbacks stuffed into their pockets.

Yes, I watched the remarks and as much as I cheered them I still think he needs to focus on what got him here. Maybe I am wrong and this gets him some votes - if so, I am all for it, but I really think he needs to concentrate on the issues we all know and love him for and contrast himself with her!

I don’t want to deny him this wishful thinking, but I wish he would keep this to himself. Everyone knows a president can’t fire a member of Congress. It makes him sound like a dictator, and I love Trump.

Like I said above - they will cycle from congress to K Street and back to congress in the revolving door we have at treasury and justice (see Comey or little Timmy).

Re: “he can’t do this”

If he punches for a Constitutional Amendment using the bully pulpit of the American president, then “Yes he can.”

Oh, he will do that without a doubt...But there is no problem at all with adding to his agenda as he goes...It makes sense to keep adding to your plan as you go along....

Noting that I will gladly Vote Trump, Trump supporters need to get him up to speed on the following problem with term limits imo.

Since corrupt Congress has, for many generations, been letting the faceless, non-elected bureucrats running constitutionally undefined “federal regulatory agencies” get away with stealing not only legislative branch powers, but also state powers, to effectively run the country, term limits for lawmakers are probably not going to be as effective as Trump and patriots are thinking.

In other words, patriots will need to work with Trump to get rid of federal regulatory agencies and force Congress to accept responsibility for its legislative powers, running the US Mail Service (1.8.7) being one of the few domestic constitutional responsibilities that Congress actually has.

In fact, if Trump can manage to persuade Congress to work within its constitutional Article I, Section 8 limited powers, then the states are probably going to have problems finding citizens who are willing to serve the country as federal lawmakers.

On the other hand, since the biggest responsibility of Section 8 is military and defense, being elected to Congress would be a good way to honor retired military personnel who would still like to serve the country.

I think this issue will get more people to pay attention to what he is saying. I think will probably help him on other things, but I could be wrong too.
