Trump Calls for Constitutional Amendment to Set Term Limits For Congress

GOP Presidential candidate Donald Trump announced on Tuesday his intention to push for a constitutional amendment setting term limits for members of both chambers of Congress.

Speaking to a crowd at a campaign rally in Colorado Springs, Trump spoke about his desire to “break the cycle of corruption” in Washington, D.C. if he elected president. The GOP nominee told the crowd it was time to “drain the swamp” of special interests. He recited portions of his newly unveiled ethics reform proposals and then told the crowd another major announcement which is part of his plan.

“If I am elected president, I will push for a constitutional amendment to impose term limits on all members of Congress,” Trump said, as the room erupted in cheers.

The people reelect incumbents because they like the job they have done

Term limits is in opposition to the will of the voters

I have wanted this for years. I don’t know why the founding fathers didn’t think of it.

Term limits is in opposition to the will of the voters

Those "voters" are completely dumbed-down and wouldn't know a Congressman from a Senator if you dangled a million dollars in front of them. Either that or they're voting for someone who's promising the most goodies.

- Four 3-year terms for Congressmen
- One 12-year term for Senators (Stagger them so 1/4 of the Senate is up for re-election every 3 years)
- Two 6-year terms for the President (Yes, 2 six-year terms. Presidents can't get nothing done in a measly four years)

At this point I am for an amendment completely deconstructing the federal government.

> “simplified tax code where a flat rate is applied to all income”

Sorry, but the USA has had FIVE flat taxes, and I mean flat income taxes, in its history beginning with the Lincoln income tax of 1861. Each of these flat income taxes ‘morphed’, ‘evolved’, ‘mutated’ into a graduated income tax. The SCOTUS struck down some of these income taxes because they were unconstitutional and others ‘sunsetted’ and were not renewed because they were unpopular. It took the 16th Amendment to get the Flat Income Tax of 1913 (with a tax code of only 14 pages) to be constitutional.

Here’s what you should take away regarding a ‘Flat Tax’:

A FLAT TAX NEVER STAYS FLAT!

Why you may ask? The answer is the 16th Amendment. In order for a flat tax to be legal it needs the 16th. But the 16th enables Congress to do whatever they want with taxes.

So as in every ‘good intention’, the Flat Tax leads to Hell after cycling through a few Congresses.

A Flat Tax needs the 16th and the 16th allows politicians to ‘unflatten it’.

What is much much better is to repeal the 16th and pass a consumption retail tax with a floor on application meaning no tax on the spending for consumption of essentials. This ensures a regressive excise tax doesn’t kill elderly and disabled folks on fixed incomes. CBO and JCT do a great job in determining the level of spending for essentials. Actuaries are friends here.

Look up HR 25. It’s introduced in every new Congress and has 5X more support than any flat tax.

Remember, the flat tax is still an income tax. In fact, it is a cancer cell waiting to metastacize. It always does without fail.

Maybe.
More likely it would push the corruption down to the congressional staffers that run everything while the congresscritter is running around trying to raise money.
Best solution (IMHO) it to put Congresscritters (Senators and Representatives) under the tight control of their states and districts. Control their pay, their expenses, their perks, their staffs, everything locally. Have rules for quick recalls.

Mr. Trump, don’t just establish term limits for federal lawmakers. The states need to also include a provision in the amendment that not only gives a given state the power to recall a corrupt lawmaker, but also a provision that gives a 3/4 state supermajority the power to recall a bad-apple lawmaker for a given state.

The states can also repeal the ill-conceived 17th Amendment. The 16th Amendment can go too.

Same argument could be made with the presidency yet we passed an amendment for it as well. Some times amendments like this are good for voters who are dumb to realize permanent life in DC is bad for everyone, and your “guy” is part of the problem.

He will have to work this through the state legislatures because there is no way that two-thirds of both houses of Congress will support it.

I like it!

Time to make sure these corrupt politicians get sent home before they are actually corrupted if that’s possible.

Too much of our electorate has no skin in the game.

Too much of our electorate has the wrong kind of skin in the game ... People who get goodies from the government won't vote to end the practice of giving people goodies from the government.

Since we will never get rid of the “professional career politician” I propose a “term limits amendment” that allows such a man/women who is so dedicated to “serving the people” that they can do so. (Yes there is sarcasm in that previous sentence!) it allows them their “selfless career” (more sarcasm!) but manages their “effect” in any one office. Also they might learn something from the proposed experience!

I propose the following:

1. Two (6 year) terms, i.e 12 years in the Senate, then they must sit out a term before they can return to the Senate where the cycle repeats.

2. Five (2 year) terms, i.e. 10 years in the House, then you must sit out 3 terms (6 years) before you can return to the House then the cycle repeats.

The “political careerist” who are certain we can’t live without them. Can go home and run for governor, county commissioner, mayor, House guys/gals can run for the Senate, likewise Senate guys/gals can run for the House.
Maybe they could even get a job in the private sector and experience there past governing genius!

My 2 cents!
