Beginning in January, Pennsylvania residents will no longer be to use their drivers licenses to enter federal buildings, and one year later, they wont be able to use their licenses to board a commercial airplane, the Department of Homeland Security wrote in a letter to the Transportation Department, which was released on Thursday. Thats because Pennsylvania and five other states failed to comply with the requirements of the REAL ID Act of 2005, a law that called for improved security measures in the wake of 9/11 which would make IDs counterfeit-proof and would store photos and other information in a national database that federal officials would be able to access.
Although some changes have been made to meet federal standards, the state passed a law in 2011 the REAL ID Nonparticipation Act which prohibits state compliance with the other provisions of the federal ID law, the [Pittsburgh] Post-Gazette reported.

The feds know government cannot prevent terrorism so they at least try to present the illusion they can, while turning all of us into suspects & making life a general pain in the ass.
They’ll postpone it... again.
Brilliant......sigh
It isn’t just those states. Come 1 June 2017, Alaska,
California, Oregon, Virginia IDs aka Driver’s licenses will not be compliant.
Check the latest re your state from the Homeland link below:

Really they were just using 9-11 as an excuse to get some standards in DLs. And somewhat it makes sense, DLs were so random in format and style it was basically impossible for anybody to really tell if that DL from a state more than 1 timezone away was real. When 9-11 happened AZ DLs were good until you were 65 with no need for a new photo, and they’d just recently moved away from the hand laminated “student ID” style. They were actually very difficult to use away from AZ because they looked like forgeries.
So at the core it wasn’t a terrible idea. Of course the way government works there’s always that disconnect between idea and execution. Some states just can’t seem to bother to comply, other states actually passed laws refusing to comply, some states say they won’t comply but then do, some states find way to comply that keep their IDs looking weird and defeat the whole purpose. Meanwhile NY still isn’t in compliance, so the deadline will be extended.
“A number of states give drivers licenses to illegal aliens and legal immigrants now. So a state ID is no longer, if it ever was, any sort of proof of citizenship.”
Apparently, some of the easiest states for illegals to get driver’s licenses failed to step up to the new Federal standards to get their state licenses okayed.
So their love of illegals could possibly force legal citizens to get passports to fly and to enter Federal buildings and military bases.
California, naturally is one of those states and could impact legal Californians after June 2017.
which would make IDs counterfeit-proof
NOTHING is counterfeit proof.
Things can be made extremely hard to counterfeit but anything one man can make can be made by an other man somewhere, somehow.........
New Mexico was to begin issuing Real ID compliant driver’s licenses today (10/17) but because of the (usual) bureaucracy they won’t be ready until early next year. The state got a 90-day extension to issue the new ones, but in essence it allows current holders to use existing licenses until October 1, 2020. Mine expires next November, but I’ll have to provide my passport when I renew to provide citizenship. Those non-citizens (including illegals) can get a driver’s license but it won’t be legal for flying or entering government facilities.
DPS Submits Plan for Federal Real ID Act
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has submitted a plan to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that keeps Texas compliant with REAL ID laws.
All Texas Driver License Cards and Identification Cards are currently acceptable to use for REAL ID purposes, such as getting into federal buildings and for use to board domestic flights. It is expected that all documents now issued will remain acceptable until October 1, 2020.
The REAL ID Act is a federal law passed by Congress after 9/11 that establishes specific federal requirements for state-issued driver license and identity cards to be accepted for certain federal purposes, like entering a federal building or boarding a domestic flight. Although it was passed in 2005, it will not fully go into effect until 2020.
Texas residents will be able to come to a DPS Driver License office with proof of identity, state residency, U.S. citizenship or lawful presence in the U.S. and obtain a REAL ID license or ID card when DPS begins producing the new REAL ID documents on October 10, 2016.
Under the plan submitted to DHS, DPS will issue REAL ID compliant Driver License and Identification cards: REAL ID DL and ID cards These cards will be marked with a star and can be used as the sole ID for domestic flights and to access federal buildings. Texans can continue to use their standard licenses until they expire or until October 1, 2020; whichever comes first. Texans can come into any DPS office to get REAL ID licenses, before their current licenses expire. If not already on file, Texans will need to present proof of identity, U.S. citizenship or lawful presence in the U.S., and state residency to obtain REAL ID compliant cards. Cost will be the same as current cost for a Driver License or Identification Card.
Texas residents holding non-compliant card after October 1, 2020 will not be able to board domestic flights or access federal buildings without a secondary proof of identification approved by DHS.
Frequently asked questions about REAL ID can be found on the DHS website.
“So, if one is called for Federal jury duty in one of the naughty states (I know MO is one), does that mean one cant serve?”
I really believe that they’ll decide it’s on you. You weren’t in the courthouse when you were supposed to be, so the judge will bang his gavel and issue an arrest warrant. “You knew you needed an ID. You had plenty of time to get a passport.”
Of course the cops will not require anything RealID-compliant to haul you away.
The Pheonix, AZ airport doesn’t accept drivers licenses or medical cards for years. If you have medical implants, you have to go behind a screen and drop drawers.
I thought NY had the “Enhanced Driver’s License.”
It’s good enough to get into Canada - maybe Mexico too, but no other foreign countries.
I’m not sure how it differs from the regular driver’s license - I assume it’s the same sort of ID as a passport - maybe less expensive though.
You knew you needed an ID. You had plenty of time to get a passport.
But I get your point. The rules only work one way.
They’re still under “extension” on RealID, they might be enhanced but apparently they’re not real.
From another article:
Those entering federal buildings to vote or to apply for or receive benefits would not require a Real ID, nor would those entering federal buildings that don't require identification.
