Football, Americas biggest prime-time powerhouse, has been thrust into a crisis this fall, with dwindling ratings sparking questions over whether it can remain a gold mine for television in an age when more Americans are abandoning traditional TV.
Network executives have long used the National Football Leagues live games as a last line of defense against the rapid growth of cord-cutting and on-demand viewing upending the industry.
But now, the NFL is seeing its ratings tumble in the same way that the Olympics, awards shows and other live events have, falling more than 10 percent for the first five weeks of the season compared with the first five weeks of last season. A continued slide, executives say, could pose an even bigger danger: If football cant survive the new age of TV, what can?

“... how to they do one damned thing to further the education process?”
Sorry, but I learned to compete,to improvise and to win in sports. Classrooms? Not so much. Overeducated fairies run schools. My participation in sports came through the schools I was attending. It’s the only thing of merit I ever got from public funding.
“I never let school interfere with my education.”
-Mark Twain
Then I’d say you are the exception. Wwhen I was at Berkeley, many years ago, we had a terrible football team because the athletes were unable to keep up their academic standing, and back then if you didn’t, you were out! To equate athletics with academic endeavor is just nonsense. Maybe trade schools need to have athletic programs, but to suggest that college athletics are comparable to the physical science, etc., just makes no sense. College athletics today is just a way to justify giving people who don’t really have the intellect to go to college a way for the taxpayers to support them there while they learn nothing of any real importance.
Hit the road, Jack?
It’s simple really. Live sports was once the final refuge where Americans could come together, set aside differences, and enjoy the spectacle of sports. Then sportscaster like Bob Costas, NBC, and ESPN had to pollute our sports with their leftist demagoguing and lecturing.
Costas ranting on gun control. Networks and the NFL forcing Obama down our throats during Super Bowl games, ESPN constantly forcing the homosexual agenda and it’s now highly politicized ESPY awards. The political Super Bowl halftime shows.
Colin Kaepernick.
It is there any wonder why a once uniting event is now just another polluted leftist tool exploited for the leftist agenda?
Ever wondered why people abandoned TV? Not because they exploited every show for a mortally corrupt agenda, right? Not because of constant leftist proselytizing, right?
Hey, you can now keep your NFL crap. And take ESPN and Bob Costas with you!
As a fan of the Premier League, I found this interesting from on the other side of the pond...
Shocker for Sky as football fans turn off with 19 per cent drop in viewing figures for live Premier League games
So I think this could be about televised sports in general more than anything.
I guess when Leicester wins the EPL and ManU is in the tank that will happen. Maybe importing too many African players?
The players can wear pink and Kaepernick and his followers can sit out the anthem. But the Cowboys cannot wear a decal honoring slain Dallas PD officers. That is the problem with the NFL. BTW, the Dallas Stars of the NHL did honor the officers. Way to go NHL!
Cannot watch the NBA....
Gee, that would be a shame . . .
They be burning their own neighborhoods.....again.
I wonder if part of the reason the NFL prohibited the Dallas Cowboys from honoring the slain officers, is because they didn’t want trouble from the “Black Lives Matter” supporters among the players?
With players like this POS the NFL is dead to so many now.
WaPo - it’s wrong to not support those who hate this nation....
I’ve not watched two minutes of N.F.L. so far this year and that is going to continue.,
Hey N.F.L., to hell with ya, ya spoiled little boys.
No NFL for me. It’s hockey season.
We who love our County will always stand for Flag, Anthem and those who died to protect it.

My dad and my late husband were buried beneath our FLAG. And you POS and those like you insult their memories.
They have never been handed a Folded Flag that has draped the coffin of a Military Service man or woman who gave their lives so POS like you can be POS!.
Kinda of reminds you of the specticals put on by the Romans in arenas.
Mr Daniels said it well, This Ain’t no Rag, its a Flag. A special Flag standing for Freedom.

Target, like JCPenny embraced the dark side and had been likewise shunned. But why hasn’t another retailer gone the opposite direction and embraced traditionalism in all its nostalgic glory? Fear of ridicule?
