Football, Americas biggest prime-time powerhouse, has been thrust into a crisis this fall, with dwindling ratings sparking questions over whether it can remain a gold mine for television in an age when more Americans are abandoning traditional TV.
Network executives have long used the National Football Leagues live games as a last line of defense against the rapid growth of cord-cutting and on-demand viewing upending the industry.
But now, the NFL is seeing its ratings tumble in the same way that the Olympics, awards shows and other live events have, falling more than 10 percent for the first five weeks of the season compared with the first five weeks of last season. A continued slide, executives say, could pose an even bigger danger: If football cant survive the new age of TV, what can?

... traditional television and the NFL are never going to be what they were again ...
Amazing that they don’t get it. Like Target, never crowded anymore, lights dimmed, soul lost.
Guess they’re waiting to see if they can get Hillary in and maybe they won’t have to worry about competing anymore.
One can hope...
Not one mention of the traitorous bastards who disrespect the flag.
About 4000 words. No mention that it may because of the boycott over anti American thugs.
The Democrat media’s desperate effort to conceal the elephant in the room on every front is becoming laughably ridiculous.
Let’s bring it down. Disloyal, exploitive, politically correct, Democratic cesspool, chicken $hit billionaires, gutless Commissioner. Let it sink to oblivion.
No search result. (Did I misspell?).
If someone can show this to be in error, good on ya. That said, my preliminary observation is that this article argues off the obvious point.
The NFL cannot stand employee stupidity either on the sidelines or in the front office. Fans don’t watch the games for political commentary from players, commentators, owners, or NFL Commissioners. We watch for the glory of the competition of athletes at their best on the field of play. The value of sports is entertainment and peak performance in a challenge of athletic skill and strategy.
Anything else is a reason to turn off the game and read the box score in the paper, talk about the good old days in the barber shop.
Except for limited sporting events, I have reached the point where I only watch 50-60s sitcoms, westerns, and movies I’ve already seen and liked.
They’re doomed because they dare not name the problem.
“NFL ratings plunge could spell doom for traditional TV”
God, please make it so!
Also, I have gotten all of my news from freerepublic exclusively since the invasion of Grenada. Thanks, Jim
Bite the hand that feeds you...
They simply refuse to acknowledge how many conservatives exist.
We all know the REAl why.
quite true.
I wonder if any of these people are related to the “ Where are all the movie goers? “ crowd.
Any number of movies are fun to watch but the movie going experience is awful. I avoid the cinema like the plague unless the film is certain to deter a younger crowd.
This piece of meat with two eyes recently said that the American flag is “nothing but a piece of cloth”. The snotnosed little bastard doesn’t get it.
good.
traditional tv today is a sewer and chocked full of commercials from businesses i boycott.
The NFL has forgotten why they are in TV...TO Play football and not further sideshows by its employees. Get back to the game...get away from politics. Fire employees where needed.
i hope the nfl dies. horribly’and painfully.
and ditto that for the nba as well.
