Pardess Mitchell is watching her community crumble.
She and her husband have lived in Lake County for 16 years. They pay more in property taxes than they do on their mortgage. The tax bill is $15,000 a year on a house they bought for $227,000 in 2013.
Theyre taxing us out of the neighborhood. Theyre pushing us out. Theyre pushing us out of our homes and communities, she said. If it continues this way well have to leave.
A Paul Simon Public Policy Institute poll released Oct. 10 revealed nearly half of registered Illinois voters said they would leave the state if they could. Many have left already.
Take Alex Schmidt. He was born and raised in Illinois. He never thought his first child would be born a Texan.
But in May, Schmidt and his wife left Illinois for Houston. He said taxes drove them out. He couldnt take another hike in his property tax bill: It was $12,000 on a Highland Park home.
As soon as I had to get a property tax attorney a light bulb went off, he said. What am I doing?
Outside Houston, the Schmidts live in a house 50 percent larger with a smaller property tax bill than their Illinois home. The schools are even better than what they left behind. And Texas doesnt have an income tax. So Alex got a raise.
Illinois has a massive problem with residents leaving the state for greener pastures.
Over the last decade, Bureau of Labor Statistics data show Illinois has experienced a net loss of 290,000 working-age adults to out-migration. But many Illinois politicians refuse to acknowledge its a problem.
...
Illinoisans pay among the highest property taxes in the country. Its not surprising that some are deciding to move as a result.

Illinois politicians envision a federally funded welfare state for themselves with perpetual re-election.
States are being absorbed into the federal Borg.
To hell with the working class.
15k in taxes on a 227k house is inSANE !
New York had the same problem. Expect prosperous taxpayers to leave the solid blue states in favor of greener (redder?) pastures. The libs can’t get it out of their heads that if they just squeeze that goose hard enough, they’ll get more golden eggs.
Its this way in other places as well. NH has a very high property tax dependent on the town of residence. Along the lakes up N many retirees move out of their homes in the summer and rent them to come up with taxes. I know some relief is given but not enough. When they bought the properlty taxes were low. However, real estate in the area has exploded in value making it nearly unaffordable for those on fixed incomes. If you dont pay the taxes eventually the town puts you out of your own home and sells the property for the taxes. Ive seen this happen in my own town. The town attorney saw no problem putting people out...he didnt understand the fuss.
I guess they're auditioning for post-retirement jobs with the NFL's front offices.
The property taxes comparably here where I live are around $1,000.
Property taxes as high as those in Illinois make it questionable to even own a house when you factor in all the other costs.
This is one of the big evils of America. OWNERSHIP is not OWNERSHIP if the Govt can take it away after you own it for not paying. It is like the gangster charging for “protection” of businesses.
Yep. And adding insult to injury is the completely irrational and inequitable variance in assessments across the board (at least in our little county). I’d say the system is due for overhaul or elimination one way or the other. Hopefully it’ll be the voluntary, disciplined, controlled, path rather than the alternative.
Basically the state owns your house and is charging you rent.
but, of course, its "for the children"....
I would love to see these pensions paid out to the state "workers" only if they live in that state, the hell holes they've created...
Illinois has a massive problem with residents leaving the state for greener pastures.”
Wait! OBAMA was going to fix all these problems!
Where did all the HOPE and Change go to?
Absolutely. But we sleep well at night, because they are such great stewards of the money (massive eye roll).
But they’ll still vote DEMOCRAT...........in Illinois............
Considering how much Il and municipal public pension plans are in the red you ain’t seen nothing yet.
Makes me grateful for Prop 13 in California (one of the few things positive in this state). It restricts property taxes increases to no more than 2% per year from its starting point (ours is increasing 0.9% this coming tax period).
Those seniors who have been in their houses for at least a couple of decades see far lower property tax bills than those who purchased in the same neighborhood in recent years.
While property tax in California starts out at around 1% of the purchase price, compared to almost 7% of property value in Illnois, the cost of housing in most of California is ridiculously overpriced. That results in some fairly large property tax bills.
Having said that, the DEMs have been fighting like mad to try and repeal Prop 13. They may yet succeed, but even the rich liberals don't want to see the outcome from that happenning.
I fled as soon as I could too. Are there things I miss? Yes, but taxes aren't on that list. Overall my quality of life is much better since I left IL.
You are spot on. And with all due respect, have these good folks been voting for the party of corruption? Democrats and the teacher’s union have robbed the peasants blind while these same peasants stood misty-eyed as they were told that it’s for the children and voted for these thieves.
Wait till Hillary is President Venezuela here we come
Reading Michael Savage.. Scorched Earht
Were more like Russia than ever
No free press
Elite Oligarchs
Fake elections
Really a one party system
