Ottawa (AFP) - Canada will impose a national minimum carbon price in 2018 in order to meet its Paris accord commitment to slash greenhouse gas emissions, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday.
"All Canadian jurisdictions will put a price on carbon pollution by 2018... To get there, the government will set a floor price for carbon pollution," he said in a speech to parliament.
Each province will have a choice in how they implement the pricing, he added, for example, by imposing a carbon tax or adopting a cap-and-trade system.
The federal government, Trudeau said, is proposing a minimum price of Can$10 (US$7.63) per tonne of carbon pollution in 2018.
This price would rise by Can$10 each year to a maximum of Can$50 per tonne in 2022.
Opposition parties and several provinces immediately pushed back, saying a new tax would sink the economy while accusing Trudeau of overstepping federal jurisdiction.
"Canadian families are struggling to make ends meet," said Conservative MP Ed Fast. "The last thing they need is a massive carbon tax forced down their throat."
Canada's ratification of the landmark Paris accord on climate change is expected to come later this week, after the debate in parliament.

One thing to remember about Canada is that most of the country is very rural. It doesn’t matter how repressive the laws might seem because it’s very hard to enforce them in most places anyway.
I used to drive a manual trans. Econoline @19 mpg with dual tanks holding 40 gallons of gas. When Canadian gas was cheaper than the US, I could go over at lunch, tank up and then pump out to the car at home. When prices reversed, I’d tank up just short of the border, drive around on vacation and then fill up upon recrossing.

The ‘carbon tax’ is a neat trick using the environment as an excuse to take money out of people’s pockets.
Canada has a health care system to finance and it isn’t going to be paid for by corporate taxes which are kept low to attract foreign entities like Burger King with their inversion into Canada a few years back.
Canada has a national sales tax already so here comes the ‘carbon tax’.......
Business gets breaks in Canada with single payer healthcare not their responsibility and low corporate taxes....
Is Hillary going to tax us this way and give business a break by taking responsibility for health care away from them completely?
