Thanks for the prayers...I’ve emailed his daughter, but haven’t heard back, and I don’t want to bother them.

Soooo...prayers continue.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

IRVING BERLIN

MEL BLANC: “ANY BONDS TODAY”

This song, originally titled “Any Yams Today,” had appeared in “Carefree.” Fred Astaire hated the lyrics, which is why Ginger Rogers sang it in the movie. After playing with the lyrics, Irving sent it off to Warner Brothers, and Mel Blanc sang it in a Looney Tunes propaganda short as Bugs Bunny. When Mel swings into his Al Jolson impersonation in blackface, it’s politically incorrect but hilarious.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

IRVING BERLIN

HOLIDAY INN

BING CROSBY: “WHITE CHRISTMAS”

This is the best selling single of all time. Irving wrote it in 1940 at a hotel in the desert. He often stayed up all night writing, and he told his secretary, “Grab your pen and take down this song. I just wrote the best song I’ve ever written. Hell, I just wrote the best song that anybody’s ever written!”

The first public performance was by Bing Crosby on his NBC radio show on Christmas 1941. He recorded the song for Decca in just 18 minutes on May 29, 1942, and it was released on July 30 as part of an album from the movie musical “Holiday Inn.” At first, Crosby didn’t see anything special about the song. He just said, “I don’t think we have any problems with that one, Irving.” The song established the fact that there could be commercially successful secular Christmas songs written by a Jewish songwriter. At first the song performed poorly. But by the end of October 1942, “White Christmas” topped the charts. It remained in that position well into the 1943. The mix of melancholy with comforting images of home resonated strongly with listeners during World War II.

Bing Crosby: “White Christmas” (1942)

The song won an Oscar for Best Original Song in 1942. In the film, Crosby sings a duet with Marjorie Reynolds, though her voice was dubbed by Martha Mears.

Howdy radu!

What amazes me is how quickly the weeks are going by lately. It seems like last Friday happened only yesterday to me/sheesh!

Good day here, son came over for lunch and we hung out for the afternoon.

You still showing 'Baby' this year? How the beans doing?

And, of course, are the kittehs behaving themselves?
