BETTY HUTTON: “DOIN’ WHAT COMES NATURALLY”

When Paramount turned the musical into a movie in 1950, Judy Garland was hired for the title role, but she didn’t get along with Busby Berkeley, who had worked her to the bone in two previous musicals. She protested by coming to work late or not at all. She was quickly fired and replaced with Betty Hutton. This clip is from the movie.

I’ve got Betty Hutton from the movie (just posted) and an outtake from Judy’s Garland’s work on the movie before she got fired.

JUDY GARLAND: “DOIN’ WHAT COMES NATURALLY”

For those curious about Judy Garland’s performance, this is an outtake from the movie before Judy was canned. She has a better singing voice than Hutton and adds a bit of vulnerability, but she lacks the energy that Hutton brought to the role.

This is from the movie. Nobody had a baritone voice like Keel.

FRANK SINATRA: “THE GIRL THAT I MARRY”

This 1946 recording is from Frank’s radio days after the war, and it’s one of those sweet Axel Stordahl arrangements.

Howdy, LUV.

How’d your toe behave today? Did it itch and make you make faces while dealing with customers? :-)

This 1958 recording is a little easier to take than Sinatra’s version.
