NBC News Lester Holt had his Candy Crowley moment at the first debate of the 2016 presidential election on Monday night, bowing to pressure from the Hillary Clinton campaign and the liberal media by fact-checking Republican nominee Donald Trump on the question of his support for the Iraq War.
Holt lived up to the expectations of his peers. But he lived down to the worst expectations of conservatives, who routinely see Republican candidates treated unfairly by debate moderators.
Again and again, Holt asked Trump tough questions that were straight from the Clinton campaigns talking points, and which were obvious set-ups for Clinton to attack (and for fact-checkers to pounce on whatever Trump asserted in his own defense).
Here are the five worst examples.
Tax returns. Holt never asked Clinton about her e-mail scandal, about Benghazi, or about the Clinton Foundation and its dubious dealings. But he did ask Trump about his tax returns, arguing not asking that there might be questionable information in them that the American public deserved to hear.
Birther conspiracy theory. Holt never asked Clinton about her past record of racist statements, including her super-predator remarks as First Lady, or her explicit appeal to white Americans in her 2008 primary campaign against Obama. Yet he asked Trump about the Birther conspiracy theory and cast it as racist.

He could console her in the new dascha...
Yep. He rode him down like he rode down the 16 pubbie wannabes. :)
Good find, Nachum.
Lester was a disgrace. Interjecting his own “fact checking” Candy style! Birth certificate question but no Benghazi? He lets Hillary get away with “I made a mistake” on the email server?
Holt gets an F, no question. Worst moderator ever.
That said, surely Trump should not have expected Holt to ask any of these questions. TRUMP should have been prepared to ask the unasked questions.
Lester Holt was there to attack Trump so that Hillary could look presidential (well, at least she didn’t pass out). TRUMP ignored up too many opportunities to steal the ball and run with it.
The performance did not make him look smart or like a leader.
Hopefully, that will make NO difference and he will win, because the majority of the American people realize that a Hillary Clinton presidency puts the last nail in the coffin of what used to be a free Republic.
I am afraid the demographics no longer support my hopes.
Lester Holt “fact checked” Trump by stating that “Stop & Frisk” was “unconstitutional.” This is a LIE. Holt had NO RIGHT to interject “facts” that were NOT TRUE!
This “debate” was a DISGRACE. The Media is going to destroy this country!
Absolutely agree.
Before the debate we were told that Holt is a registered Republican. Big deal! It’s easy as pie to register for a party. No one asks you to prove you really support that party or its nominees. Holt might very well have registered as a Republican just for this moment...to give himself cover when he was obviously biased against Trump.
Holt was giving her the first answer on the questions, and not giving Trump the chance to rebut.
Those faces she made probably didn’t work in her favor.
Who fact checks the fact checkers?
Qui quidem obstat, quod compescit?
Those were her normal expressions. LOL
Yep - and a couple times the smug grin was wiped off her face so fast you could sense the pucker effect going on in her.
I was talking at the TV trying to tell him a few things to say but overall he did good, especially with the "subtle" attempts to gang up on him - he refused to sit idly and allow lies to be spouted.
Trump did smack down Holt, is that racist?
