This guy had a long rap sheet of violent crime. Served time in TX for shooting at officers in San Antonio. He wasn't going back to jail and he got his wish.

The article indicates this was a chance encounter by two plain clothes detectives there to serve an arrest warrant on someone else. He just happened to be there smoking a joint then brandishing a weapon. The detectives called for backup then approached this guy to apprehend. He had a felony conviction and carrying a handgun that would send him back to prison. He made a conscious decision to go out blazing, IMO.
