EXCLUSIVE: A famous 1980s title is eyeing a comeback. ABC has nabbed Magnum, a sequel to the classic series Magnum P.I. that starred Tom Selleck, with a script commitment plus substantial penalty. The project, from Leverage creator John Rogers and Eva Longorias UnbeliEVAble Entertainment, will keep the fun, action-packed style of the original as it follows Magnums daughter, Lily Tommy Magnum, who returns to Hawaii to take up the mantle of her fathers PI firm. She and her tribe of friends mix tropical beaches with the seedy underbelly of international crime and modern espionage, even as she tries to unravel the mystery of the blown spy operation that ended her career in Navy Intelligence.
Rogers will write the script and executive produce through his Kung Fu Monkey banner alongside UnbeliEVAbles Longoria and Ben Spector and Kung Fu Monkeys Jennifer Court. Universal TV, which owns rights to the original series and where UnbeliEVAble is based, is the studio.
Longoria and Spector, whose UnbeliEVAble is under an overall deal at Universal TV, looked at the studios catalog for titles that could be suited for reboot. They identified Magnum P.I. as particularly viable and relevant, and then Rogers unlocked a way in with Thomas Magnums daughter that he took custody of in the shows finale. While the trio felt that rebooting the series with another Thomas Magnum would be daunting, focusing on his daughter was an organic way to update the franchise.

The original Magnum was a spiritual successor to Hawaii 5-0, and was as much about Magnum himself as it was about the cases he worked. It sounds like this new show will be nothing more than yet another female detective show with a couple of trappings from the original thrown in to tie it to Magnum, but with no actual continuity to the original.
The only real over-arching mystery from the original show was the identity of Robin Masters. To my memory there was nothing from Magnum’s case files that could be usdd in the new show to continue the story, and it sounds like they’re focusing on something else for the main character anyway.
Meh.
Longoria? Won’t watch a minute of it. She’s a rabid idiot liberal.
Yes I have!
They will be Chihuahuas with rainbow studded colors.
Two words: Mrs Colombo
One of the worst spin offs ever tried
I am an author wanabe and all I can say is how I would do it.
the pilot I would tie to one of the better loved scripts from the series.
I would tie her coming to Hawaii for something like a funeral of one of the characters from the series that can’t be used because of death of the actor. perhaps the death of Higgins who would be in his 90s at t the time of the show.
if I used the robin master estate it would be in disrepair because of non use.
the biggest mistake that could be made is to try and shoot the same show that was shot in the 1980s.
the flavoring from the show of magnum pi should be there but it would be a big failure if the show was about a bachelorette who free loads off a rich reclusive author who pretends only to manage the estate.
I liked Simon and Simon better.
The Power Wagon was my favorite part of the show.
Tom Selleck is an all-time fav of mine, as is Burt Reynolds. The reason I love Fig Newtons was due to an episode of Magnum P.I. where Magnum was security for Burt and found Fig Newtons in his trailer.
I recommend Blue Bloods as a follow-on to Magnum. Selleck is top shelf, as always.

"Mrs Colombo" was the first thing I thought of when I read this article! Programs like this, where they try to capitalize on the popularity of a classic series with a new character as the lead, rarely work.
I miss old TV shows/movies with men like Tom Selleck and Robert Mitchum.
“Longmire” on Netflix is an excellent series.
I somehow just didn’t have to see the name to know who posted that!
Happy Friday to you, Salamander!
Automatic failure without Donald Bellisario.
Agree!!
That, and the ‘woman replacing the male’ hooey, make for a dud.
I can’t stand that absurd show Leverage, Eva Longororia doesn’t impress me much, either.
Let me guess...Higgins’ replacement ‘character’ will be gay and there will be biracial couples, everywhere.
Ping.
Remember this is the new millennium, she will own the mansion and live their with her wife (Robin Masters). And probably drive a Tesla.
I’m so predictable!
:D
Happy Friday to you, too!
How about the female pitcher show? Talk about an agenda. Are all the millennial girls and their snowflake boyfriends supposed to see that and think, “Gee maybe we *could* actually have a woman for president, too!”
Shouldn’t she be “Magna”?
