Weird new warship USS Zumwalt has broken down while on sea trials, three weeks ahead of her formal commissioning ceremony.
The futuristic $4.4bn vessel, which features a so-called tumblehome hull, suffered a seawater leak into the auxiliary lube oil system for one of her main propeller shafts, according to USNI News.

I guess we are only in the first half hour of the new ship design. Tune in next week for the rest of the story.
Propeller shaft seal leak - not unheard of during shakedown/sea trials.
Not that I wouldn’t demand compensation from the company who did the work, just saying it is only getting news because it’s the “latest and greatest” doing it’s first run about.
Just run a diagnostic. That always seemed to work in Star Trek: Next Generation.
For the want of a good shaft seal................
in 10 months a baby doth squeal...?
$4 billion for one small ship is an outrageous price. For another $9 billion I'd rather have another aircraft carrier. It's more flexible and would carry a heckuva lot more firepower.
In a Trump presidency, warships will get built better at much lower cost. All it takes is some American ingenuity. The Zumwalt ship sounds like it was designed by globalist and the Cheap Labor Express.
I'm no expert, but the Zumwalt is sounding like an Edsel.
Yes, but the Zumwalt has a state-of-the-art neonatal ward.
Yeah, $4.4B just doesn’t buy what it used to.
The Zumwalt’s have been relegated to a career as testbed ships. There’s only going to be 3 of them. They’ll eventually mount a rail-gun on them and test a bunch of next-gen electronics. But the fruit of that testing will be mounted on a cheaper-design ship. Those ships will presumably be built in greater numbers and be more likely to be successful from the outset.
I must have missed the Z-Gram on that. Is it true?
I can type one up....I typed them for Elmo back in the day.
Yeah. That was what they said about the F22.
Was going to be supplemented by a LOT of F35’s that would be a LOT cheaper.
Sea water is a lousy lubricant.
Start ups never go smoothly.

Let me see ... the world has been building ships with propeller shafts that go thru the hull for roughly 150 years. It would seem to me that such technology should be very mature and not present an issue in this day and time.
Bravo Zulu.
I see you spent some time in Bremerton, my home town. (Hi, Mom).
Americans use to have a “can do” spirit. I once saw a documentary on the American space program. Time after time, in beginning stages, the missiles would ignite, then blow up and crumble on the launch pad.
They finally got it right.
If that were to happen today, there would be calls to abandon the whole project. People would snicker, poke fun, etc.
They don’t make ‘em like they used to. Ya get lots of bells & whistles but durability and reliability? Not so much.
Maybe too much high tech with no clear mission.
The Russians build arguably less reliable warships, but they have a very clear purpose; Naval combat. Littoral Combat ship? Not so much, such that we have to up its weapons, but even then we are being left behind.
