Only whites can be racist, so there is no point in even examining whether blacks are racist. More whites have negative views of blacks after four years of Obama, and this is because of their racism, not because they voted for Obama and were bitterly disappointed. And finally, believing that treatment of racial and ethnic minorities is not an important issue automatically means that you believe they should be treated badly. Wow. How does anyone utter so many non-sequitur as Dana Milbank does without at least throwing up?
You may well be a racist, if none of these flaws in Milbank's argument even occurred to you, and you still reject them out of hand, and if you think my articulating them ipso facto makes me a racist. The Washington Post has gone off the cliff. I’m tired of being told what is in my heart, or the hearts of others. The is communist style condemnation, pointing fingers.
I grew up in a neighborhood that saw lots and lots of bilateral racism. I know what it looks like, I know how destructive it is, and I abhor it. I've also seen the most incredible transformation of racism to acceptance, from both sides, that you can imagine - and this is never reported or embraced. I'm white, but grew up actually anti-white in a counter culture kind of way, and identified very much with black culture. As I've grown, I've come to see reality as reality - namely that we're all flawed human beings, mostly with the same desires, and hopes, and degree of selfishness.
What I also see is that everyday, ordinary people (i.e. those who are not narcissistic political charlatans) have been progressively getting beyond race, for years. At the same time, race profiteers are flourishing, and it's hurtful and disgusting.
I don't know much about Milbank, but Wiki says he grew up in Merrick, NY. The last census info I saw from that town is that it was 95.2% White, and 1% African American. So, like so many I've met when I was in college, Milbank is an expert without experience.
If you want to get beyond race, live with race, and deal with your differences. Then come talk to me Dana. The rest of us are living in a complex world in which having a D after your name doesn't mean that you are virtuous or good for minorities.
