Hillary Clinton Was Politically Incorrect, but She Wasn't Wrong About Trump's Supporters
Clinton said half of Donald Trumps supporters were prejudiced. If anything, her numbers are too low.
Ta-Nehisi Coates Sep 10, 2016
This week Matt Lauer was subject to withering criticism for his ineffectual interrogation of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. In a litany of complaints, one rose above allLauers failure to challenge Trumps mendacious claim that he opposed the Iraq War. That Trump was lying is not a matter of opinion, but demonstrable fact.
Lauers inability to cite the record was a striking journalistic failurebut one related to the larger failures implicit in political reporting today. Political reporting, as it is now practiced, is a not built for a world where outright lying is one candidates distinguishing feature. And the problem is not limited to the lies the candidate tells, but encompasses the lies we tell ourselves about why the candidate exists in the first place.
Yesterday, Hillary Clinton claimed that roughly half of Trumps supporters could be characterized as either racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic you name it. Clinton hedged by saying she was being grossly generalistic but given that no one appreciates being labeled a bigot, that statement still feels harshor if you prefer, politically incorrect.
One way of reporting on Clintons statement is to weigh its political cost, ask what it means for her campaign, or attempt to predict how it might affect her performance among certain groups. This path is in line with the current imperatives of political reporting and, at least for the moment, seems to be the direction of coverage. But there is another line of reporting that could be pursuedWas Hillary Clinton being truthful or not?

Why?
I know you do a lot of great work here, but I wonder who benefits from having FR cluttered up with this Huffpo/DU clickbait.

Or even writes off a quarter. Whatever the percentage, those she derided aren't a marginal number, and yet she rejects them as "irredeemable". We need a President of all, not a Ruler oppressing dissent.
Good luck with that!
What the HELL is a Ta-Nehisi??? WHO names their kid, Ta-Nehisi??
From Wiki on Coates:
Coates was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to father William Paul “Paul” Coates,[8] a Vietnam War veteran, former Black Panther, publisher and librarian, and mother Cheryl Waters, who was a teacher.[9] Coates’ father founded and ran Black Classic Press, a publisher specializing in African-American titles. The Press grew out of a grassroots organization, the George Jackson Prison Movement (GJPM). Initially the GJPM operated a Black book store called the Black Book. Later Black Classic Press was established with a table top printing press in the basement of the Coates family home.[2][10] Coates’ father had seven children, five boys and two girls, by four women. Coates’ father’s first wife had three children, Coates’ mother had two boys, and the other two women each had a child. The children were raised together in a close-knit family; most lived with their mothers and at times lived with their father. Coates said he lived with his father the whole time.
Ta Nehisi? Not an American name. Are foreigners defining us again? If she/he/it happens to be from here, she/he/it doesn’t have a clue!
I think we should all buy this T-shirt and wear it to the polling booths on Nov. 8th.
Fire up the ovens the Deplorables are multiplying!
Vater Heydrich would be so proud of his children.
Why yes, Ta-Nehsisi Coates, you’re so well known as a level-headed non-partisan in matters of race that when you say that far more than half of Trump’s voters, which, given that he represents at least 50% of the population means that far more than 25% of all Americans are “either racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic you name it””, I will certainly take that as a basic truth.
Cafe Press has a line for Deplorables. Not as pretty as this, though.
Many freepers recognize your reference. What percentage of the general population does? 5%? Less?
