iPhone 7: Why do we even care?
ZDNet ^ | September 6, 2016 | David Gewirtz

A long time ago, in a valley far, far away (Silicon Valley), I was a young product manager giving a sales briefing on new software products. A salesman raised his hand and asked, "Why do we need more software? I mean, seriously. Don't we have enough already?"

He had a point. Even though Facebook, Google, and even Photoshop were still at least a decade in the future, the world was awash in working solutions that were getting the job done. Wasn't enough enough?

It's with that question in mind that I have to ask why those of us with iPhone 6s devices should even care about the iPhone 7. As many of you know, I'm on the iPhone Upgrade Program. Theoretically, all I have to do is drive an hour and a half, wait in line for an hour or two, fill out paperwork for an hour, transfer everything dear to me to a new phone, and drive back home for an hour and a half with a new phone.

BUT WHY?

According to a very excellent rumor summary in 9to5Mac, the new phones are supposed to come in a new shade of black. So? Most of us use cases anyway. I did an informal poll on Twitter, and 69 percent of the respondents keep their phones in cases. I've had my iPhone 6s Plus in a case since I got it. I don't even remember what color it is. It could have been Rose Gold for all I care.

I think we're well past the point of diminishing returns when it comes to phone upgrades.

Unless they start cooking and cleaning the house, what's the point of getting the latest.

Why should we even care?

I think I am the first poster after the thread initiator. Does that answer the question?

I will need to get a new iPhone soon. My iPhone 4 had 16 gigs of memory. I figured that would be enough for my iPhone 6. Recently I wanted to download something and couldn’t, because I didn’t have enough memory. So I’ll have 64 gigs with my new iPhone. That should be enough for now.

My iphone 4 won’t even run my banking app any more. Time for me to upgrade at least.

LOL - I don’t even have a smart phone. . .well, I got one to visit my daughter in San Francisco to use uber, but once home again, it is useless. I am so glad that I’m not addicted to or dependent on these devices.

As long as the damn things make and recieve calls, along with hold a battery charge............

But I forget, for the smartphone set, actually using it as a phone is not the point...........

“LOL- I don’t even have a smart phone.”

I don’t have one either. My wife bought me a tablet that had a phone, camera, word processing and a blue tooth keyboard and mouse. I hated the thing so much I gave to my 5 year-old granddaughter to play games on. I’ve come to the conclusion that they should be called “Make you less Smart Phones”

I had iPhone 5 with the small size screen. Then last week I broke my rule from last year to never put it in my swimsuit leg pouch because I had walked into the sea at the beach with it up to my knee before I realized I still had it.

Last week we were going to the beach early because there was chance of rain later and we made plans to do other things. So to make a short story long - I broke my rule and had my iphone in my pocket because there was a surfboard next to the boar rental place the has “Fanatic” on it and I wanted to take only the second selfie of my life (I don't photograph very well. I am 51 I can do without it. I like taking pictures of my kid).

When we reached the place there were three workers raking and cleaning around it so I decided to take the selfie going back. My wife and I then had a discussion as we walked about whether it was too chilly for our daughter to go in the water because the Baltic Sea is cold to begin with and it was cloudy and windy. Meanwhile my daughter was pressing that she wanted to go in with me. During that time I totally forgot my iphone was in my pouch.

We decided I was going in for a dip and later we would all be swimming in the hotel pool. Sure enough I walked right into the sea with it while there was nearly no one else on the beach besides us and a few early morning joggers.

After 10 minutes a felt my iphone and was like... that's gone, too cold to leave the water now, so I kept swimming. Then I dropped it on my wife's blanket and said I did it.

Lost three or four days of vacation pictures and short videos. The first picture I took was of my daughter standing next to a bus stop ad had “RELAX” on it and that's why I wanted the selfie with “Fanatic”.

I was sitting on my beach towel telling my wife - great now I get to be depressed. My daughter said look on the positive, now you can get a new one. At that moment my wife actually pulls out a new android vodafone still in plastic and hands it to me. She said she got it for testing and review but if I like it she could get a good deal on it and I could keep it.

I was like No Way! Now I have one of these new wider screen smart phones. :)

(I cut this short because it is time to go to breakfast. We head back to Berlin tomorrow.)

It’s a phone, not the the meaning of life, Sheesh!

If you like it, enjoy it. If you don’t, save your money.

“Unless they start cooking and cleaning the house, what’s the point of getting the latest.”

The most important point would be to replace a phone that’s no longer working correctly. That’s actually my situation, and I’ll be ordering an iPhone 7 Plus as soon as an order can be made.

The overall package may also become compelling, in terms of things like better screen, better camera, faster operation, more memory and more storage. Other innovations like unlocking with a fingerprint are worth considering also.

I switched from iPhone to Android back in the iPhone 2 or 3 days precisely because of the bigger screen and also because I couldn’t read Freerepublic on the iphone due to the small screen AND the fact that the browser didn’t support wrap around text when you zoomed in (whereas the Samsung did).

Anyway I haven’t looked back since. I give all the credit to Steve Jobs and Apple for coming up with such a great device as a smart phone, but I now have a Moto X Pure and am very happy with it - it’s big, fast and I even got a case that makes it easy to operate with one hand.

I've got a 5c, I've had it for years, it works great, I love it. Prior to that I only had LG flip-phones. I would say the iPhone is perfect for my needs.

As long as it still works, it remains my phone. I don't have any need to get another until it breaks. And frankly if it does, my first inclination would be to find another 5c just because I'm used to it, and if Apple's still supporting it with security fixes, that's good enough.

Let someone else upgrade for the sake of having the latest and greatest. God bless 'em. But that ain't me.

“LOL - I don’t even have a smart phone. . .well, I got one to visit my daughter in San Francisco to use uber, but once home again, it is useless.”

Really? The camera stopped working? It won’t run GPS software? It won’t make phone calls or send texts?

For me the iPhone replaces several devices. It’s incredibly versatile. I even have some excellent external ballistics software for it, very useful for long range shooting or if you want to compare loads/cartridges. It’s also often handy to use the Internet anywhere, for searches or whatever.

“I am so glad that I’m not addicted to or dependent on these devices.”

Are you “addicted” to your computer? Or your washing machine?

Just curious...

Don’t be nasty and FYI...........a washing machine can last for many decades and only does one job. Nobody “lives to do laundry”; however, many “live to be on their idiotic “smart phones”. Also, for some people, the usefulness of a “smart phone” is extremely minimal.

I have a 6 Plus. I’ll likely skip the upgrade to a 7.

But...

My phone lets me video conference with my Grandaughter in another state regularly, not to mention friends and family everywhere. Even with 10 people at once. (Google Hangouts)

It lets me see through my home security cameras, alerts me to motion events, lets me see and talk to anyone at my door or near my other cameras, whether I’m at home or not, and whether they ring the doorbell or not. (See ring.com) And it lets my turn my other Apple devices and older phones into remote AV devices.

It flys my Drone.

It has working speech recognition for messaging and other stuff.

It has replaced my GPS devices. It tells my where I parked my car (automatically) along with the car battery condition. (See Zus) I can navigate with or without an Internet connection but it’s traffic aware when when I have a data connection. It can also tell me all about what is around me. (Localscope, etc.)

It can locate my other devices, and vice-versa. It lets me answer calls on any of my Apple devices, (Tablets, Mac) even on Wifi alone at home if I’m in a spot where the cell signal is bad. It controls lights and other stuff, and displays family and friends pictures and videos on the TV if I want.

It manages my accounts, gets my mail and messages, pays my bills, gets my stuff from Amazon and elsewhere, tracks my packages, manages my calendar, buys my movie tickets, streams Netflix, Vudu, police scanner, music and YouTube, and lets me follow and post to Free Republic.

It helps me monitor my health, my exercise, my heart rate, my sleep, etc. (Fitbit, etc.)

It takes good pictures and good video (Try HyperLapse) and lets me easily and instantly share them with whomever I want.

I can point it at the sky and find out what planet, star or satellite caught my attention. (GoSkyWatch, GoSatWatch)

I have calculators, surveying tools, weather alerts, local emergency alerts, Network analyzers, List makers, musical instruments, BBQ thermometer monitors, and Augmented Reality GPS based games on it.

All that, and I’m a retired senior citizen with a fine appreciation of technology.
