Revolution against 'rich parasites' at utopian Burning Man Festival as 'hooligans' attack(T)

It is supposed to be a utopian vision of peace and love but this year's Burning Man Festival has been marred by "hooligans" carrying out a "revolution against rich parasites".

The festival plays out each year in Nevada's Black Rock Desert where 70,000 people build a city in a week, burn a giant wooden effigy of a man, and then restore the arid playa to its original state.

In recent years it has become popular with Silicon Valley millionaires, and billionaires. Luxurious so-called "plug-n-play" camps have sprung up which use hired staff like cooks, builders and security, and allow international jetsetters to drop in for quick visits.

Many traditional "Burners" claim that is a betrayal of the spirit of "radical self-reliance" that is a cornerstone of the festival, which began in 1986.

As anger boiled over one camp called White Ocean, which hosts high profile DJs on a state-of-the-art stage, became the focus of anger.

The camp first made an appearance at Burning Man three years ago and its founders included the British DJ Paul Oakenfold and the son of a Russian billionaire.

you left out the carbon foot print (giant) for burning the effigy. How dare the desecrate mother nature, pollute the air and offend gaia all in fell swoop

... This is supposed to be about love, happiness, sharing, giving and appreciating. "It is unbelievable that there are angry people here."

You think I'd be met with love and happiness if I walked around smiling, handing out information about the personal and societal harms associated with sexual immorality? You think there might be some "angry people" after all, no matter how sweet I was?

There must be a hypocrisy gene in our DNA—we humans can be such jerks.

Yup.

Right. Restore it to its original state. Leave no trace and all that.

Except for the area lighting, the giant artificial insects and the human debris and detritus too small to see from this vantage point.

Heh, heh...heh, heh...

We get to see a lot of the burners inbound and outbound. Odd that quite a few can afford to get here but are on the corners looking for financial help to get out.

I don’t believe camps with “staff” should be allowed as long as tickets are limited.

Keeping staff (which all need tickets) takes away tickets and raises prices for actual participants.

BM isn’t a festival where you sit on your ass and watch a prepared show. The idea is EVERYONE IS THE SHOW. And it was amazing when most people did that.

I used to go every year but haven’t been for a while. Seems like it really went downhill since it became mainstream and they maxed out tickets

I used to be able to walk the entire festival barefoot and not see a single piece of trash. I never locked up anything and didn’t even hear of a single theft.

Last time I went it was too filthy to walk 1 block barefoot. Multiple things were stolen from our camp and several vendors screwed us. I practically cried about how much it changed since the vultures arrived

I would like to offer this up as an example of Political Correctness.

The self-proclaimed “purists” wanted to purge the group they deemed not to be in keeping with the original intent, God only knowing what that would have been.

So now the “purists” feel justified in purging the group they don’t like.

This is political correctness run amuck. It’s another Leftist trait.

The PC movement was very strong in the Hitler years prior to him becoming Chancellor.

The brown shirts and the SS followed along behind, bringing that PC movement to it’s pinnacle.

The PC movement in the U. S. is just as strong now, as it was in the Hitler years. The Black Lives matter group is a prime example. Those who supposedly harm blacks (pure imagination) are fair game.

This type of thing is a very clear and disturbing warning sign about what is on the horizon.

If Hillary Clinton is elected, this sort of thing will not only grow, but will be mainstreamed more than it has been to this point.

Under Trump, it will cease as he refuses to feed into it.

Laurel & Hardy's last full length film was "Utopia" the production quality was poor but the story was great.

“...and glued our trailer doors shut.”

Next year, guards for the uber rich will be armed.

Better yet...build a wall.

they can’t keep their BS “principles” going for even one week.

Next year the techies will have armed security. And the year after that the “righteous” burners will organize a Jacquerie.

Not sure if JBTs will be allowed at BM. Might detract from the harmonies created there.

There are several churches who set up at Burning Man every year and would be greeted with nothing but love (at least what it was like when I used to go)

Despite the sexual displays, only a small fraction of people would go for promiscuity. The dust and climate is very bad for sex. There was also so much more to do that sex was the last thing on your mind.

My last time, I just sat under the stars with friends and BBQd at night. And during the day I would do engineering/IT workshops

I drove to Reno and back yesterday.

Burners were all over I80. You could spot them by everything,. everything being covered in gray dust that was once mud.

I'm baffled how anyone could call that a good time.

My point was that, as the subjects of the article learned, it’s peace and love in Utopia as long as everyone stays strictly in line ... whatever the “line” is.

brother you ain’t kidding. I know a bunch that go from working with them in New York City. And surprisingly they are from other states. Hippies and freaks all of them. It would do the country quite a bit of good. Paris Hilton going down is hysterical. Isn’t this the baby who cried so badly in jail that they moved her. Usually you just get beat up for that. The few nights I spent in jail I decided crying would be a bad idea. That spoiled brat

This wasn’t an official action and 99.999% of participants over the years did nothing to hurt these “rich” camps.

It was maybe 2-3 hooligans committing 1 crime in several years and hundreds of thousands of people. With so many various groups accepted, it’s still as close to all-accepting Utopia as you can get on this planet.

I think staff should be banned (since they take up tickets) but I’m the only one I met who thinks this way. Most people don’t mind the rich camps at all.
