One thing about "Philadelphia Freedom" that struck me was that the vocal line was rather nondescript. Most of the real work is done by the strings, and the violin line is more interesting than the rest of the song.

The French horns work really well, and the vocal counterpoint is clever.

Indeed, the instrumentation was much more intelligent than the words. LOL!

BEN SELVIN: ”BLUE SKIES”

Irving wrote this tune in 1926 as a last minute addition to a Rodgers and Hart musical titled “Betsy.” The show bombed, and this song ended up as the sole survivor. On opening night, Belle Baker had to sing 24 encores of “Blue Skies” due to audience demand. On the 24th encore, Belle forgot the words, and Irving sang them from his front row seat. It must have been hilarious.

This was the first recording from 1927, and it was pure Twenties dance band.

What a thrill for that audience to have THE man sing his own song! Good save, Mr. Berlin! :)

I wish I could have been a fly on the wall that night. I’ll bet the audience was in stitches when it understood what was going on.

Irving got the standing "O" in 1942 when "This is the Army" premiered on Broadway, and Irving came on stage in his World War I doughboy uniform and sang "Oh How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning."

He got a 15 minute standing "O" and stopped the show. But that's a story that will come up in a few months.

AL JOLSON: ”BLUE SKIES”

With “Blue Skies” being one of the biggest hits of 1927, Warner Brothers included it in its first talkie, “The Jazz Singer.” It wasn’t a very good film, but it was a technological landmark. Jolson improvised most of his dialog. Note his way of vocally “selling” a song, something that would disappear when Bing Crosby made his appearance.

FRITZ KREISLER: ”BLUE SKIES”

Even classical musicians got into the act. When World War I broke out, the classical violinist Fritz Kreisler went back to Austria to fight for his country. The world mourned when news of his death in battle arrived – and it turned out to be a false alarm. Fritz was such a national treasure that Austria released him from military service before something bad could really happen to him.

Fritz was gifted on two instruments. In 1915, he and a pianist named Bowman performed Beethoven’s Violin Sonata in A minor, Op. 47, the famous Kreutzer Sonata, in concert in Portland (OR). After the concert at a party, they performed the piece again, this time with Kreisler on piano and Bowman on violin.

Everybody loved Fritz, and no one had a bad word to say about him during his life. He made a cottage industry of writing encore pieces for violin and piano in the style of other composers and passing them off as their compositions “discovered in the ruins of a German monastery.” Fritz would have had a hard time explaining how he found an Irving Berlin score in a German monastery, so he played this one straight.

You may have noted the shifts between major and minor in the score, a wonderful technique in Irving’s compositional style. In 1927 Fritz took advantage of this, used the original intro Irving had written for the song, and slowed the piece down, deciding to accent the melancholy aspects of the tune. The result was something that sounded like late Brahms.
