BANGOR, Maine The closing of one of the last two Howard Johnson restaurants in a couple of weeks will mark the end of its fried clam strips, ice cream and other menu staples that nourished baby boomers and leave the once-proud restaurant chain teetering on the brink of extinction.
The slice of roadside Americana will no longer be served up in Bangor after Sept. 6.
For waitress Kathe Jewett, it's the only job she's held since starting work when the restaurant opened in 1966.
"It's bittersweet, but it's nothing to be sad about," the 68-year-old Jewett insisted Tuesday during a break from serving customers. "I've been here for 50 years and it's time."
The closing will leave only one Howard Johnson restaurant, in Lake George, New York.

I remember those. And we’ve become a nation of very special snowflakes to take any offense to that.

All you can eat clam strips, mmm...
I forgot another Howard Johnson's memory. Sixth grade class field trip in 1975. We stayed at the Howard Johnson's in Washington, D.C., the one Nixon's team used to listen in on the McGovernites in the Watergate Hotel complex across the street. The HOJO rooms had communicating doors so there was no end of trouble caused.
I nearly ran out of money, having spent it in the game room at the Marriott in Philly, and had to spend my remainder on a loaf of bread and a small jar of peanut butter at the Safeway that was at the ground level of the Watergate. The restaurant there provided me with plastic utensils, so I could eat my peanut butter sandwiches on the way back to Connecticut.

My Dad had a Flying A Gas Station in the 60’s in Altadena, CA. They were bought out by Phillips 66.
Trivia, Fonzie wore Flying A Mechanic’s Overalls on Happy Days. My Dad still has his “somewhere”.

Oh, yeah....Sambo’s. That was a HUGE part of my life growing up. My dad was an assistant manager at one in Spokane. It was my sister’s first job as a hostess at the same place. The food was pretty standard, but good, especially the breakfasts.

I think the only Sambos that still exists is in Santa Barbara, CA.
I’ll have to stop there on the way the next time we visit my F-I-L in Solvang.

Kresge'sI would go to the Kresge's at Lenox Square (Atlanta Ga... when it was still an open air mall) to get the latest Beatles album the day they came out.
Getting to be fewer of us who remember getting those marvelous records in chronological order and being amazed at how they changed with each one.
Having the whole catalog just thrown out there may be nice, but smelling those new notes fresh out of the oven was something else.

Sambo’s was no doubt PC’d out of existence.

More for the list:
Childworld (the 1960s equivalent of Toys R Us, which used to be called “Bargain Town”)
Robert Hall’s (where boys got their suits)
Bradlees (northeastern discount house that went up against K-Mart and Caldors).

Still some Maid Rite's left in Iowa.
I just had my first one 2-3 years ago. Didn't think much of it. Next time I was in the area, I tried it again. Better memory this time. Now I like to try and stop when I'm near one.
There is a guy who worked for my buddy, that when we are on the road, heading to Iowa, we will pick him up about 20 of them.
