Last Night Was the Turning Point in Trump's Campaign
PJMedia ^ | August 19, 2016 | Roger Kimball

Donald Trump cleared up one thing in his speech in Charlotte, North Carolina, last night: he is running to win.

Throughout this very odd election cycle, some pundits have periodically suggested that Trump wasn't serious in his run for the presidency. First, it was said that he got into the race simply to garner publicity, to burnish his "brand." He himself, it was said, was surprised that he did so well in the primaries.

When it became clear that he was poised to win the nomination, the story changed slightly. Now, he was said to be playing the buffoon because he didn't really want the job. The same line was repeated and amplified post-convention whenever Trump went off-message or waved The National Enquirer about. Anything having to do with Ted Cruz really seemed to set him off. And off he went, as his plummeting poll numbers showed.

But these last couple of weeks have shown the world a new, more disciplined Donald Trump. ...

I had enjoyed reading Roger Kimball for years, but he’s been unjustifiably critical of Trump this entire campaign. I had written him off as one of the (no longer) entrenched GOP establishment and stopped reading his scathing articles.

Now this – very surprising and encouraging.

Garner publicity? Before he got in the race there weren't 10 people in the USA who didn't know who Donald Trump was.

I just found his article kind of stupid and narrow minded. As if he began, realized he was being way too nice to Trump, and then wormed his way into finding a way to attack him (for using the term “African-Americans,” of all things).

And Trump had every right to go ballistic every time he mentioned Ted Cruz - the guy was (and, I presume still is) a lying scumbag.

Yes, but Ted Cruz says Constitution every third sentence which makes him a principled Conservative and worthy of praise.

Pray America wakes

I believe that is one of the most annoying animated gifs I’ve ever seen.

Agreed. But if you read his previous articles on Trump you'd call this high praise. I posted it because I was shocked at the contrast, reinforcing the fact that Trump is starting to do what he needs to do to win.

As planned, Trump has started his third act. The Donald is genius...using theater instead of Wall Street dollars.

Thanks for posting. I hope he’s right.

It is a bit disconcerting to see Trump’s ego rule over discipline. I hope it was “only a phase,” even better if it was theater.

We’ll see.

I've just read these books by Robert Greene: The 48 Laws of Power; The 33 Strategies of War; and The Art of Seduction.

These books could have been written to explain Trump's campaign, and his successes (except that they were written several years ago). There are an amazing number of parallels. Trump is a natural.

I refuse to watch TV news but the wife continues.

She came in laughing at the lateest lame ploy they were using.

Now that Trump has toned down his rhetoric, the presstitutes are saying “Well, Trump didn’t put his foot in his mouth this time, but HERE’S what he was saying before!” and they dredge up and run some of his old performances.

Sickening.
