Pressed by the F.B.I. about her email practices at the State Department, Hillary Clinton told investigators that former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell had advised her to use a personal email account
The account is included in the notes the Federal Bureau of Investigation handed over to Congress on Tuesday, relaying in detail the three-and-a-half-hour interview with Mrs. Clinton in early July that led to the decision by James B. Comey, the bureau’s director, not to pursue criminal charges against her.
The journalist Joe Conason first reported the conversation between Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Powell in his coming book about Bill Clinton’s postpresidency, “Man of the World: The Further Endeavors of Bill Clinton,” which The Times received an advanced copy of.
Mr. Conason describes a conversation in the early months of Mrs. Clinton’s tenure at the State Department at a small dinner party hosted by Madeleine Albright, another former secretary of state, at her home in Washington. Henry Kissinger and Condoleezza Rice also attended.
“Toward the end of the evening, over dessert, Albright asked all of the former secretaries to offer one salient bit of counsel to the nation’s next top diplomat,” Mr. Conason writes. “Powell told her to use her own email, as he had done, except for classified communications, which he had sent and received via a State Department computer.”
Mr. Conason continued, “Saying that his use of personal email had been transformative for the department,” Mr. Powell “thus confirmed a decision she had made months earlier — to keep her personal account and use it for most messages.”
A longtime defender of the Clintons, Mr. Conason interviewed both Mr. and Mrs. Clinton for the book, a granular account of the years since Mr. Clinton left office that will be published on Sept. 13.

True. Planned and implemented before the conversation with Powell.
And they did have a conversation, although it wasn't exactly as Hillary remembered. Very rarely is one's memory of an event the same as the actual event.
For example: First, there is Hillary's CLAIM of her memory of the event. You have already read that.
Now... Here is what likely happened.
Powell brought up the subject of Hillary's private server. He told her she should use a private email account like he did. He thought that building your own server might be crossing the line and illegal and risky. She told him she already had expert advice and didn't need his advice. (what she actually said would violate the no profanity rules here on FR). He dropped the conversation.
Since he's going to be 80 years old, I'm not sure what he wants, maybe a Presidential Medal of Freedom, maybe cushy jobs for relatives....who knows...but he's got his oar in with her for some reason or other.

Not "except for classified communications, which he had sent and received via a State Department computer.” She never used the state department's secure emails system at all. She took his advice to use a state system for classified comms to mean "use your private for everything"? She did *not* follow his advice as stated in this article. Nor did he advise her to homebrew a server. You can’t compare the two. Hillary had a Private Computer System and Network. She had her own DNS server, private Domain, private file servers, and Private Computers.
In fact, Hillary refused to use Encrypted Devices after being told it was a State Dept requirement!
Hillary, who doesn’t know how to do a Google Search - told the State Director of IT that the encrypted requirements were “Non-sense!”
How’s that for judgment?
Powell got two emails a day, in that era. It’s Apples and Bowling balls.

I think we can expect Shrillary to roll out the Powell endorsement event very soon. Trump is on a roll and the Democrats need something .... I’m guessing that Powell has offered his endorsement to her, at a time and place of her choosing.
I seriously doubt that Powell ever discussed the private server with Shrillary, and probably never discussed email at all. With all the grand strategic and diplomatic issues of the world, why would Powell even think to spend his time with Hillary discussing email???
So? Everyone would advise Hillary to use private email ... for personal non-work related communications. Now Powell may have done the same thing as Hillary to avoid oversight but I’d love to hear his explanation as to why it isn’t against the law.
