LONDON (AP) — A blimp-shaped, helium-filled airship considered the world's largest aircraft flew for the first time Wednesday with a short but historic jaunt over an airfield in central England.

Engines roaring, the 302-foot (92-meter) Airlander 10 rose slowly into the air from Cardington airfield, 45 miles (73 kilometers) north of London.

A hybrid of blimp, helicopter and airplane, it can stay aloft for days at a time and has been nicknamed the "flying bum" because of its bulbous front end.

Apparently it was developed to be reflective and helped reduced heat absorption. They just hadn’t discovered its explosive properties until after it was too late.

Holy crap... I have never heard that.

It makes sense, though; I’ve seen the film of the Hindenburg burning many times. It went up FAST. That skin of the gas bag just disintegrated, like an accelerant.

I guess the jury is still out on the metallic coating factor.

“...Although the metallic paint may have contributed to the disaster, the busted myth revealed that the hydrogen did all the heavy lifting...”

Well, there it is...

I love that show. Some of the best moments on TV from that crew.

I remember that episode now.

Right. There are a lot of disadvantages, but...there are some things they can do if you can work around the issues of weather and such.

Heavy lifting and endurance are two such advantages.

I think the real question should be what was the cause of the initial ignition. If the hydrogen was ignited first, then I would solely blame the hydrogen however if the ignition source turned out to be the thermite coating then perhaps that was the only reason that the Hindenburg burned in the first place.

From any high-school science class one can learn that hydrogen is highly flammable and the German engineers knew that and took extensive precautions to prevent the hydrogen from igniting. I think a better test would have held the hydrogen factor constant.

Oh by the way I think these white elephants are one of the biggest and most absurd wastes of taxpayer dollars that will get more people killed then produce substantial value. Right up there with windmills and electric cars in my book.
