LONDON (AP) — A blimp-shaped, helium-filled airship considered the world's largest aircraft flew for the first time Wednesday with a short but historic jaunt over an airfield in central England.

Engines roaring, the 302-foot (92-meter) Airlander 10 rose slowly into the air from Cardington airfield, 45 miles (73 kilometers) north of London.

A hybrid of blimp, helicopter and airplane, it can stay aloft for days at a time and has been nicknamed the "flying bum" because of its bulbous front end.

I have flown on a C-5 many times, from Germany to Dover, and California to the Philippines and back. It is pretty short on creature comforts, but it was free. No airline tickets needed. 😀

“A great ASW platform.”

What kind of defenses does it have? Looks like it would be a sitting duck for a surface to air missile.

Google USS Akron and USS Macon. They were also Helium filled but were unable to survive foul weather. After the USS Akron and USS Macon crashed in foul weather and lost their entire crews, the USS Los Angeles was grounded and never flew again.

And the R-101 in the UK, 3 years before the USS Akron

Subs will never have an anti air capabilities. They will never have the real time sensors to do that. That would defeat the purpose of being a sub.

A modern sub comes to comm depth (around 90 feet) twice a day to transmit/receive satellite messages. Then they stay down at least 400 feet. Once they go on patrol they never surface. The will never be threat to an air platform.

The Daily Mail article says it currently can carry a 10 ton payload. 200 tons is a bit down the road. They plan to build a 50 ton version next.

You know, I actually do remember reading about Akron and Macon. I just didn’t remember that they had helium in them.

Think about the Germans using those giant bastards during WWI to bomb England... you’d never hear them coming until they were right on top of you.

But one incendiary round from an AA gun and Boom... done.
