The hunt for exoplanets has been heating up in recent years. Since it began its mission in 2009, over four thousand exoplanet candidates discovered by the Kepler mission, several hundred of which have been confirmed to be Earth-like (i.e. terrestrial). And of these, some 216 planets have been shown to be both terrestrial and located within their parent stars habitable zone (aka. Goldilocks zone).

But in what may prove to be the most exciting find to date, the German weekly Der Spiegel announced recently that astronomers have discovered an Earth like planet orbiting Proxima Centauri, just 4.25 light-years away. Yes, in what is an apparent trifecta, this newly-discovered exoplanet is Earth-like, orbits within its suns habitable zone, and is within our reach. But is this too good to be true?
red dwarf star interesting
Red dwarf means flares and its tide locked like our moon.
Habitability unlikely since the planet would have to be very close in.
Red Dwarf Ping!
Again?
Yes it is too good tone true!
At present speeds it would take hundreds of years to get there............
If 10% of the Democrats went to 10 of these planets and we promised no Republicans would follow, they could have their Utopia! Wouldn’t that be grand! 100% of the Democrats gone and happy and 100% of Republicans here and happy!
If we can reach them they can reach us. They are probably here. Anyways if there is an earth like planet next door how many are there in reality? Maybe more than they think.
Got spaceship go claim it. :)

...
Venus and Mars are closer.
That would be fantastic, except that you got one little detail wrong.
The Democrats would be gone, they would make their “utopia”, and they would *still* be unhappy. Heck, they would probably still blame Republicans.
People are going to have to learn how to live generation after generation in deep space without resupply from Earth, if we are to colonize our solar system. That same technology will be used to send a human population on a one way trip to Proxima Centauri.
“... just 4.25 light-years away ...”

It would only take 80,000 years to get there!
I have read several sci fi novels by grandmasters of the genre, about Colonization trips, and they all end in disaster before reaching the destination............
They would turn any utopia into a craphole. So send them to one out of three until they are gone. They would have their third world crapholes.
If you do the math, going at the speed of the Pluto probe, 54,726 years
We’ve been finding exo-planets billions of light-years away and it is only now we find one around Centauri?
Sounds about right.
Amazing isn’t it? And all these planets are right in our face so to speak. I’m confident the galaxy is jammed with them.
