Aida Hadzialic, 29, expressed remorse for her actions after being caught drink driving as she announced her intention to step down from her post as Sweden's Minister for Secondary Schools. At a press conference on Saturday, she said she would formally resign on Monday.

Hadzialic was stopped at random by police on Thursday evening and was found to have a blood alcohol content of 0.2 grams per litre. At Saturday's press conference, Hadzialic explained that she had been at a concert in Copenhagen and had two glasses of wine before setting off to drive to Malmö four hours later. Apparently she believed the alcohol would have left her system in that time.

Saudi businessmen, wait until the plane is out of Saudi Airspace, then immediately proceed to empty the plane of all liquor.

In order of the nations with the most generous limit down to the four countries that ban any blood alcohol whatsoever, that’s:
0.8 g/l: Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta and the United Kingdom
0.5 g/l: European Union countries not otherwise mentioned — and also the Australian limit.
0.49 g/l: Latvia
0.4 g/l: Lithuania
0.22 g/l: Cyprus
0.2 g/l: Sweden, Poland, Estonia, Finland
0 g/l: Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia

How does someone become a government minister at 29?

Methinks she's put her lips to good use.

While I’m no fan of Sweden’s new conquerors, 0.02 is an INSANELY low limit and Swedes (whatever is left of them) should be ashamed of themselves.

Then again Sweden has one of the lowest driving death rates in Europe: 3 per 100K drivers, versus 11.4 for the US.

Perhaps their low tolerance for drunk driving has something to do with that? In Sweden 0.02% (up to 6 months imprisonment), 0.10% (imprisonment, maximum 2 years)

Why? No bureaucrat is ever held to account. She’ll probably walk that decision back when she realizes no one will actually make her quit.

Given that Sweden is a small country, with expensive gasoline, deaths per 100K drivers might not be as good a comparison as, say, deaths per million miles driven.

I agree with BobL that 0.02% BAC is a ridiculous standard. How much actual impairment is there at that level? More than holding a conversation with a passenger, for instance? I’m sure it provides plenty of revenue to the Swedish justice system, though.

Public caning was used in Finland in the 1970s. Muslims can’t handle their liquor.

...yet Great Britain is the almost exactly the same as Sweden, and they have our standard.

So who knows.

In UK you can get up to six months in jail, on a first offense, and an unlimited fine.

That kinda makes sense, I guess. It takes a lot of concentration to drive on the wrong side of the road, and alcohol will impair that, particularly about 0.08.
