House Speaker Paul Ryan wins primary, defeats longshot GOP challenger praised by Donald Trump.
Ryan was being challenged by Paul Nehlen.
Nehlen had been courting Trump supporters and won praise from the Republican presidential nominee last week. But Trump endorsed Ryan days later.
Ryan had largely ignored Nehlen in what had been a sleepy primary before Trump thanked Nehlen on Twitter for his comments defending Trump. Nehlen won the backing of some prominent conservative figures, including former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, but it wasn't enough to overcome Ryan's popularity in his southeastern Wisconsin district.
Ryan was first elected in 1998 and this is his first re-election win since becoming speaker last fall.
There should be a rule that the SOTHOR cannot come from a state the voted for the opposite party is the preceding Presidential election.
There were some local polls out and Ryan was winning by large margins. Here’s a couple.
If I remember, the only polls showing anything other than a blowout were those AMP Calypso polls as reported by Prntly, which seems to be a click-bait one-man organization. They did get a lot of coverage here for some reason.
The GOP needs to keep the House and the Senate folks to accomplish anything with President Trump!!!
That is why Ryan won. He pays attention to his district.
by supporting a democrat you are supporting hillary
you can rant and rave in your delusion till hell freezes over but that wont make it truth
Nope. Paul Ryan is campaigning for a Democrat right now: Hillary Clinton. Voting for his opponent is simply self defense.
I won’t be voting GOP down ticket in November. All Trump supporters should signal that intent until Democrat enabling “Republican” quislings like Susan Collins and Paul Ryan shut up and fully get on the Trump Train.
The GOP is not fully supporting us. They have made it 100% clear they will not support POTUS Trump’s agenda. Therefore, there is currently zero reason to fully support them. Period.
That is why Ryan won. He pays attention to his district.
Nope. You’ve got it exactly backwards. He won because his district is not paying attention. Or maybe they do support Paul Ryan’s destructive anti-American agenda. No good choices there, LOL.
The GOP needs to keep the House and the Senate folks to accomplish anything with President Trump!!!
Your mistake is assuming a GOP House and Senate want to accomplish anything with POTUS Trump. They do not.
This will be the first election in my life where I’ve donated to a democrat.
Wisconsin - 341 of 341 Precincts Reporting - 100% Name Party Votes Vote % Ryan, Paul (i) GOP 57,391 84% Nehlen, Paul GOP 10,852 16%
“But if youre upset because as Speaker, Ryan has greater influence, then take that up with the 236 Repbulicans who voted him into that job. The voters of Congressional District 1 had nothing to do with it.”
Somebody elected the traitor to Congress. Sure looks like it was the voters in his district.
You are also making assumptions.
Hmm, the difference is I cannot vote for SOTHOR. In this case Ryan is chained to the people WI-01 which is very liberal district. His first priority is to be re-elected. So all of us are being held hostage to a SOTH that is in turn held accountable by liberals. See the difference?
Just dang.
This will be the first election in my life where Ive donated to a democrat.
If you want to stop Paul Ryan’s anti-American agenda the proper action now is to vote for his Democrat opponent. To use a turn of phrase from our favorite AWOL conservative: A vote for Paul Ryan is a vote for amnesty. Sadly, it’s that simple.
Wow, that has to be one of the most moronic posts I have ever seen on FR!
For the record, Walker stood up to the ENTIRETY of the union movement. Hundreds of millions of union dollars from DC were spent in the Capitol demonstrations & sit-ins in Madison, the flight of Democrat legislators out of state to prevent the Legislature from meeting, the recall petitions, the recall elections and the enforcement of Wisconsin Act 10. Walker broke the Teachers Union figuratively AND financially.
Your Kleagle perjorative is also noteworthy. Nice.
The difference is: You are sadly mistaken.
WI-01 is NOT a liberal district. Thanks to state GOP redistricting in 2000 and 2010, WI-01 has moved from being a swing district when Ryan was first elected in 1998 to leaning Republican to solidly Republican.
Out-of-state FReepers simply need to stop posting erroneous information they think they "know" about Wisconsin. You are all laughably ignorant.
