Much divides the country when it comes to the issue of gun violence. That’s why it is so important to find common ground so that, together, all Americans can work to reduce the damage that guns cause in our society.
A new initiative starting this week in New Mexico has the potential to bring people together toward a common goal — making people safer without fighting over whether assault weapons should be banned or the meaning of the Second Amendment.
Called Guns to Gardens, the movement organized by New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence simply helps people dispose of unwanted weapons. Instead of leaving a gun lying around the house, a person can take it to Guns to Gardens, which is raising money to buy back the weapons. Those unwanted guns will be melted and turned into spades and shovels to be used in community gardens. There will be public arts projects. It’s a multi-year, statewide effort, an attempt to secure weapons so that they can no longer be used to harm.
This is especially important in safeguarding children. In New Mexico, children die by firearms at a rate almost 60 percent higher than the national average. A gun that is no longer functional can’t be used to commit suicide or to play a game of Russian roulette or to shoot a friend accidentally.

Well, I’ll admit that I’ve been tempted to use a gun as a shovel a few times lately.
Fighting these thistles is driving me crazy, and when I run into a tenacious one and no shovel handy, I have considered excavating it with high speed projectiles.
No, but the spade you made from it can be used to kill, and to hide the body afterward. It's a tool, you morons.
Those who beat their weapons into plowshares will plow for those who don't.
Their “common ground” fanciful idea would not work for me, I need both firearms and garden tools.
