Two men claiming allegiance to the Islamic State group killed a priest and seriously injured another person in a church on Tuesday in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, a suburb of Rouen in Normandy. Our Observer, who describes his town of 30,000 residents as a quiet one where different communities coexist in peace, was taken aback by the attack.
The priest often lent a room in the church for other religious communities to use
Kalminthe Gomis, 39, is an entrepreneur who runs a Facebook page on which residents of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray discuss local events. He currently lives in Rouen, but spends a lot of his time in the suburb where he grew up and where his parents live.
Our family is Catholic. My mother goes to this church every day. Luckily, shes currently on vacation in her native country, Senegal, so she wasnt there today. I spent a lot of time at the church when I was younger, where I took part in youth activities, but these days I mainly go there for weddings, baptisms and holidays. Many of the churchgoers are of African origin, and theres always a big turnout for Sunday mass. The priest who was killed, father Jacques Hamel, was a very kind man, very involved in the local community. Whenever members of other religious communities be they Catholic or Muslim needed spaces for their activities, he would offer them the use of a room in the church.
"I was worried that an attack could take place in the centre of Rouen, if anything, but I never thought it would happen here"
Theres a Muslim prayer room near the church, and there have never been any tensions between the two communities we pray separately, but we say hello to each other, we smile. When I was little, my Muslim friends were often invited along on youth activities organised through the church. And today different communities truly coexist in peace in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray. For a long time, I worked as an educator in a youth centre, and I never heard any of the kids expressing radical leanings.
Thats why its really difficult for us to understand why something like this has happened here. I was worried that an attack could take place in the centre of Rouen, if anything, but I never thought it would happen here and even less that it would be carried out against a church whose members are so diverse, a church that stands in solidarity with other religious communities. We had never heard of any threats whatsoever against the church. It just makes no sense.
According to a November 14 article in French daily Le Parisien, Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray has had at least one brush with extremists in the past. Several young men from the region who had made plans to join the ranks of the Islamic State group met in a mosque in the town.
Why not? It's a 'gun free zone' ain't it?
You don’t understand and THAT’S the problem............
If someone lets a rabid dog into your house. Is it really the dogs fault when he bites you? Or is the fault of the person who let him in.
This person seems to imagine that there’s a “cause” other than the existence of Islam.
Sigh.
Will the French release the priests body for burial or just incinerate it?
The French government refused to release the bodies of torture victims from the massacre at the Paris nightclub.
Muslims do the killing and the modern Vishi French run the ovens.
We don’t understand. why here? This is so typical of liberals. All the damage that results from progressive policies is supposed to happen to somebody else, not them.
Simple, when they were a small percentage of the population, they are quiet. As it gets larger like a growing cancer it becomes more malignant until he consumes the host. Simple. My doctor would probably opt for radiation treatment if I had a cancer. Perhaps massive dosses of radiation is needed to treat this disease?
Why?
Because.....Muslims!
It’s not Rocket Science, people!
You can’t bribe them for your safety.
What is the Pope bitching about. They are his migrants.
“Why here...?” If you know anything about islam, that is a stupid question.
Looks like somebody didn't feel like coexistin'.
When you start with the false assumption that “they are just like us” it is impossible to understand.
Their religion/ideology instructs them to convert the non-believers and kill those who fail to convert. Once you accept that fact everything else falls into place.
EVERYONE NON ISLAM IS A TARGET FOR DEATH .... DON’T YOU GET IT ???
**It just makes no sense.**
WWIII had been declared against the west, and all we do is put out flowers, light candles and post hashtag comments. That’s all you need to understand.
“Why here?”
Because they’re Muslim.
Only a few verses in the Koran, many more like this:
Quran (8:57) - “If thou come on them in the war, deal with them so as to strike fear in those who are behind them, that haply they may remember.”
Commit a few and publicized horrible acts so that everyone is scared into submission - this is the definition of terrorism, and the Koran is calling for it.
Quran (8:12) - “I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them”
A command to strike terror with horrors to scare them into converting. There’s no other reason to cut fingers off people when it limits their value as slaves.
A scorpion and a frog meet on the bank of a stream and the scorpion asks the frog to carry him across on its back.
The frog asks, "How do I know you won't sting me?" The scorpion says, "Because if I do, I will die too."
The frog is satisfied, and they set out, but in midstream, the scorpion stings the frog. The frog feels the onset of paralysis and starts to sink, knowing they both will drown, but has just enough time to gasp "Why?"
Replies the scorpion: "Its my nature..."
