In addition to the strategic impact on the electoral college, there was a tactical reason for this pick. Pence is a solid GOP guy. I don’t mean GOP-e, because his conservative bona fides were there when he was in Congress. What I mean is that he is not considered an outsider by the GOP.
The tactical impact is that it will defuse the anti-Trump movement and kill it off even before the convention. This is a party unity pick.
I think it is real. Newt essentially telegraphed the decision on Hannity’s show last night and Pence was left off the list of this mornings convention speakers.

I don't see the unions being anyway a factor in Trump's choice. And I don't see this choice pushing rank and file into the camp of Bill Clinton's 3rd term.
On a side note, Mike Pence almost broke the porn barrier on the internet as the story spread.

But then he screwed it all up.
I told everyone that Trump would not forgive it or forget what Cruz did to him. I have watched too many years of The Apprentice to believe Cruz could slide back in to the slot.

Not surprised by the decision by Mr. Trump to go with Gov. Mike Pence because Mr. Trump NEEDS the conservatives to come home. One of the good things about Gov. Pence is that he is a devout Christian. There are many devout Christians that live out in the midwest. I know of a good number of them. I am friends with a number of them and just got back from a Bible conference vacation which has its bases, though in western PA but from the midwest.
Congrats Mr. Trump and Gov. Pence. WELCOME!
