Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-N.C.) joined other Democrats to call for the reinstatement of the federal assault weapons ban, arguing that the Second Amendment only applies to muskets.

“This is something as a non-lawyer that I have had trouble with from the very beginning. When the framers of our Constitution considered the Second Amendment, they were talking about muskets,” Coleman said during a news conference outside of the Capitol Building on Tuesday.

“And freedom of the press only applies to hand pressed single sheet newsprint. It is an amazement to me that liberals have the intelligence to breathe”.

AND, distributed by waifs on street corners....

Next, radio,tv stations limited to 10Watt power?

Sounds reasonable to me if muskets are it !! /sarc

“The blunderbuss could be considered an early shotgun, and served in similar roles.”

“it was typically loaded with a number of lead balls smaller than the bore diameter. Barrels were made of steel or brass.”

The muzzle (and often the bore) was flared with the intent not only to increase the spread of the shot, but also to funnel powder and shot into the weapon, making it easier to reload on horseback or on a moving carriage

“After the Battle of Lexington in 1775, British General Thomas Gage occupied Boston, Massachusetts, and upon negotiating with the town committee, Gage agreed to let the inhabitants of Boston leave town with their families and effects if they surrendered all arms. While most of the residents of Boston stayed, those who left under the agreement surrendered 1,778 long arms, 634 pistols, 273 bayonets, and only 38 blunderbusses.”

No joke, muskets were the state of the art military weapon at the time. Something comparable now would be a SAW or a Barret 50

#1: James Madison’s intent was that the 2nd Amendment give citizens access to any weapon that the bad buys coming after them might be bringing. So it’s only natural that the weapons which 2A covers evolves right along with the weapons that the bad guys have access to.

#2: Thomas Jefferson owned a .462-caliber military-grade rifle capable of firing 22 shots without reloading, as fast as he could pull the trigger. The same rifle was standard issue to the infantry in the Austrian army of the late 18th Century. So there’s little doubt where he stood on the matter.

If that is true then the interpretation should be as it applies to muskets making the citizenry equally well armed as the army. Therefore, we, as citizens, need to armament available to us as the military. We should be able to buy nukes, bombers, artillery, etc..

liberalism should be classified as a mental disorder.

I see she is taking the hypocrite Michale Moore’s position.

Good luck Bonnie trying to make the case that the Founding Fathers were only thinking of the current day back in 1787 and not the future of the country. LOL!

Furthermore, new technology does not mean Rights are void.

Finally, the government gets their power and authority from we the people and not the other way around. So if we can’t have it..., then neither can they.

Forty five years ago the MSM and entertainment industry was very anti-handgun. They even found the SCOTUS Miller decision to imply that handguns, like sawed off shotguns could not be considered “ordinary military equipment”, but RIFLES were A-OK!
Rifles=GOOD!
Handguns=Bad!
Then around 1986, they decided rifles were suddenly bad, and some were more bad than others!

Private citizens could own artillery pieces in the 18th century, so we should be able to own them today as well.

You can. But, only the muzzle-loading, black powder variety...

Stupid is as stupid says.
Therefore,
Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-N.C.) is extremely stupid.

“they were talking about muskets”

Yes Bonnie because muskets were the most advanced military assault weapons of that time. Time marches on.

Why not outlaw muskets?

Then only outlaws will have them and they'll be no match for modern weapons.

So maybe we’d better start some Militia Clubs. I’m sure there are some retired Marines around who would love to lend a hand in training civilians. Why the Marines? Because EVERY Marine is a rifleman. Remember Belleau Wood!

My son is a Marine. He was a marksman with rifles and pistols before he set foot in USMC boot camp. His training in aikido moved him to the front of the class in specialized hand to hand in boot camp. He’s a real estate broker today and finishing a degree in nuclear physics.

Seems we belong to the same family. My son is a Marine as well, retired after 20+ years Airborne, ANGLICO...First Gulf War.
I taught him to shoot when he was small and he grew up hunting. First Day in boot camp he shot expert and instructor asked where he learned to shoot. “My mom taught me.”
He is an excellent shot and has taught many others the finer points of marksmanship. I think every child should be taught the safe handling of weapons. There wouldn’t be “accidents” that way. I’ve taught my children and grandchildren as well as a lot of women. I still enjoy hunting and trap shooting as well. Gunpowder is in my blood.
