CLEVELAND Ted Cruz is making an extra trip to Cleveland to address a closed-door meeting of influential conservative leaders this Friday ahead of the Republican National Convention, according to four people familiar with his plans.
Cruz will speak to a gathering of the Council for National Policy, a secretive group of conservative activists, many of whom backed the Texas senator in his failed presidential bid earlier this year.
The Council for National Policy is a nonprofit but some of its members, including CNP President Tony Perkins, who also serves as head of the Family Research Council, are part of a subgroup that had voted to endorse Cruz in hopes of uniting the conservative movement behind a single candidate in 2016, rather than splintering as it had in 2008 and 2012.

I really don’t think Cruz actually knows what Cruz wants...He seems blinded by his hatred for Trump and Trump alone...
I really think he’s psychotic....
seems like they are going to work against citizens and reboot the rino coalition in four years.
He’s a weasel with overwhelming personal ambition
Not a note of sincerity about him once you watch him with his family and in those staged videos
He thinks he beat the National Enquirer story of his serial adultery but when the time is right, dem bones gonna rise again
He must practice mind control over those gullible Christian conservatives
“seems like they are going to work against citizens and reboot the rino coalition in four years.”
... or this year.
Cruz has creeped out most normal people from the outset. That's why he never got anywhere in the primaries.
Maybe they’re going to talk him into assassination?
*** theres something really sneaky about him. ***
I am envisioning Cruz today when he flew with Obama to TX on Air Force One, pretending he is President..
Cruz and Obama together. Talk about snakes on a plane.
“That bastard is going to try to commandeer the delegates at the Republican convention. Hes going to go rogue during his speech. I can feel it.”
Agreed on all points, including ‘bastard’.
My only reservation is: Is Trump being naive, or is he going to reel out rope to “Ted” (not his real name) so that he will hang himself. Is Trump giving “Ted” the stage so that he will destroy himself with finality?
If he does.....he need not ever return to Texas.
GG2 called them the same thing.
Could not be a better description.
That, or ....
Fakes on a plane.
The first sane comment on this thread.
What a bunch of Nervous Nellies, deflected by one propagandistic word in a misleading headline: "Secretive".
There's nothing particularly "secretive" about Tony Perkins or the Council for National Policy. It's simply an umbrella coordinating group that isn't a public actor.
That Ted Cruz, the leader of the conservative faction of the GOP, should be meeting with a leadership group within the conservative wing prior to the Convention should come as no surprise.
To perceive this as some "dark plot" against Trump betrays the insecurity of his supporters. That Politico could insert one misleading word in a headline and evoke such a response is, well, disappointing.
P.S. Can anybody think of any reason why Cruz would be speaking -- or even allowed to speak -- at the Convention except to endorse Trump? Can anybody think of any logical reason why Cruz, who still has a future, would not endorse Trump?
C'mon, people...
Is 0bama informed?
Fox said he flew on Air Force One (with Obama) to Dallas today.
Is this after meeting with Obama on Air Force One today?
Highly inappropriate for him to do this.
I’ve been a Republican and voted such since Gen Eisenhower. I’ve worked for Republicans all these years. This is the first year I’ve been aware of a person PICKED
by the average, fly over country, six pack, American put through a wringer, that Donald J. Trump, a pure, bred American, presidential candidate, is being put through. Paul Ryan, Ted Cruz, romney are going among the “elitests” to take him off the ticket and put one of their weak kneed squeegee sponges on the ticket, to represent them, not the average American working person.
I voted for Cruz, but I’ll tell you, when he runs again, I’ll do all I can to keep him from representing Americans in Texas.
.
Sen. Cruz needs to get with the program. Mr. Trump is the nominee.
Period!
