Calling in black is essentially an excuse for a day of self care, wrote Slack engineer Erica Baker in a Medium post called "Processing."
...
"Sometimes, I don't want to deal with the emotional weight of having to explain my feelings to someone who couldn't possibly understand them, no matter how hard they tried," she wrote.
...
The phrase "calling in black" has been around for at least a year, when "Evelyn from the Internets" posted a video on YouTube advocating the need for a mental health day.

I am sick and tired of all this bigoted, prejudiced stereotyping of the coloreds as shiftless, worthless, good-for-nothing no-accounts. If you give them a chance, they'll prove to be conscientious reliable workers.
And they wonder why all their jobs are going to India.
Spent 35 years in Silicon Valley working 60 hr. weeks and longer on the road. Never needed or took a mental health day. My work WAS my mental health.
Get a grip, wusses.
I know I would. Anyone with an entitlement attitude and/or chip on their shoulder would be on my no hire list.

back in the day, we called it coming down with a case of “sick leave”, cough, cough.
It must be nice knowing you’ll never be fired, no matter how bad a job you do.
Oracle Database corporation had a core tech worker on duty 24/7/365. Eventually he burned himself into an overworked heart attack driven by his boss. No calling in black.
Later after surgery, at the hospital itself, his boss showed up with the worker’s laptop, to guess what?
Keep on working!
Nope, then they just fired the guy who actually is expected to be there doing the work.
They would only do yours if they wanted to tank the business.
Well if Elizabeth Warren can get a university gig as a “person of color”, then I think everybody should be allowed to “call in black”.
I'm calling bullshit. It's an excuse to get a free day off from work.
And if you truly can't work because you are stressed that a black person got killed, then you are too much of a pain in the ass for anyone to hire you.
I have a dead child - how's that for mental health - and I still manage to go to work. So shut up.
Fire the snowflakes and deny their racism.
You miss the point - corporate productivity improves if the Affirmative Action hires just stay home. As long as they are on the payroll for statistical purposes, it’s a win-win situation.
Would you really prefer for them to show up complaining and disrupting the work flow? Then get a job in a federal office and see how the real world works. It’s easier to work around someone that isn’t there. Give them a mission achievement award for not showing up.
No, I didn’t miss the point. I understand that if that is their attitude they are likely useless employees and yes, keep them at home.
The other point is they are gaming the system and crying need when it’s really just laziness. Two separate points.
Let’s just call it what it is, a person exemplifying the work ethic that is ingrained within a race or community. Don’t forget to add in the loose tennis shoes.
We used to call them “mental health days” - but, then, we worked in a psychiatric hospital....
No, they don’t want them whites gettin’ uppity.
Texas, we got to get the hell out of here. Put this BS on your list and if someone tries to use it, one way trip to the northern (or southern) border.
