A Minnesota traffic stop turned deadly Wednesday evening as a police officer opened fire on a black driver.
The victim, 32-year-old Philando Castile, died at a Minneapolis hospital, a family member told The Washington Post. Castiles mother, Valerie Castile, told CBS Minnesota that her son had died at Hennepin County Medical Center.
The St. Anthony Police Department confirmed the drivers death during a brief Thursday morning press conference but did not identify the officer involved in the shooting or the officers race.
The bloody aftermath of the confrontation was broadcast live on Facebook by a female passenger in the car.
He killed my boyfriend, said the woman, whose Facebook page named her as Lavish Reynolds, as blood soaked through Castiles shirt.
In the video, Reynolds says Castile was legally licensed to carry a firearm and was reaching for his identification when the officer opened fire.
He let the officer know that he had a firearm and he was reaching for his wallet and the officer just shot him in his arm, she says.

OMG, the last thing that poor victim heard was his girlfriend going on an on and recording herself. He was still moving while she was saying he was dead.
The cop looks in his 50s, but only on the force five years?
Read the article. The kid seems sraight up. Same job for a long time. Licensed gun.
Brutal call for cop to make. But if he said his gun was on his person then he SHOULD NOT have gone for anything.
I was in the back of a cab with cab driver friensd when i was young. passenger started saying he had a gun. The driver put the brights on and we got pulled over.
I walked out o the car towards the police like it was nothign and they screamed with guns pointed “stop there!”
I clearly had no weapon but I guess they could have shot me anyway
I’m pretty sure the first thing they tell you when you take your CCW class is that after you’ve identified yourself as a CCW holder you wait for officer instructions.
So many people can’t seem to understand that “don’t move,” means DON’T MOVE.
Lavish, really?
He let the officer know that he had a firearm and he was reaching for his wallet and the officer just shot him in his arm, she says.”
The officer told him to put his hands up but instead he started reaching for something. When are these people going to learn to follow instructions! Just because the driver said he had a concealed carry, it doesn’t make it so. I’m sure police officers have heard every kind of lie in the world. But now, since this guy DIDN’T FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS, he is dead and the thugs will exploit this unfortunate tragedy.
‘
‘Kid was straight up’...?
I’m reading he was a Crips gang member.
Bad move. Stupid cop. Were do they dig these guys up? Are they going for the trade school drop outs?
DUH, when they run your plate, they know that you are a CCW carrier. You automatically put your hands in plain site, and then tell the officer exactly what you are going for when you reach for ANY thing. Common sense.
The only thing the cop heard was “I got a gun”, then the guy made a “furtive movement” in the cop’s eye.
Expressing a statement and having your audience understand what you meant by that statement can be 2 different things. The world is perceived differently by everyone. Was the cop wrong? In that an innocent citizen was killed, it looks that way.
Every official encounter with a cop is a life threatening situation for both sides.
Now we have the BLM victim they want to use to disrupt the conventions.
>>When are these people going to learn to follow instructions!
I wish they’d give cops a robot like the bomb squads use so the cop can hide in his car while the robot rolls up and talks to the citizen. That way the cop isn’t forced to kill anyone for being confused and people would probably rather talk to the robot than the cop anyway. I know I’d rather deal a faceless robot than some “hero” roadside tax collector with a twitchy trigger finger.
Cop allegedly asked the man for his ID and he was reaching for his wallet. This is bad. Very bad.
I don’t understand your story at all. Sorry.
Where did you read that. I saw his FB page and it didn’t seem like he was any gang member.
He did according to his girlfriend in her video. Did you watch it?
I taught all three of my kids that when a policeman stops you, you place both hands on the steering wheel at the 10 and 2 position, and you do not move them unless the officer instructs you to do so.
If you are getting your license, you tell the officer where your wallet is and that you are going to reach into your pocket or the dash to get the wallet, and you do so when he says you can do that.
I told them that is for your safety as well as the cop’s.
I have done this myself when stopped by a cop, and never a problem.
Unfortunately common sense plays no part in too many of these situations; these incidents make some areas basically “unpoliceable”. It is impossible to reconcile a scared cop and people who disobey basic instructions; if this victim was in fact complying with those instructions the cop should be jailed.
Cops will kill you.
Is that really what you see as the tragedy here?
But if the cop asked him for his ID?
