WASHINGTON — Days after the Orlando gay nightclub shooting, a fed-up emergency room doctor from New Orleans flew to Washington, hoping the assault-rifle massacre that claimed 49 victims might spur movement on gun legislation.

In particular, Dr. Jay Kaplan, like many of his colleagues, wanted Congress to lift a 20-year-old amendment that effectively bans most federally sponsored academic research into gun violence...

The National Rifle Association, the powerful gun-rights lobby based in Fairfax, Va., pushed through the research restriction in 1996 after a federally funded study linked guns in the home to an increased risk of homicide...

“It was a shot across the bow warning people that if you do research in this area, [the NRA is] going to come after you and hassle you and make your life miserable,” said Dr. Mark Rosenberg, then head of the CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. As a result, he said, “science has been stopped dead in its track for 20 years...”

Food intake and body composition in novice athletes during a training period to run a marathon.

The change in diet and body composition was studied in a group of 9 female and 18 male subjects, starting a training program for 18 months with the ultimate goal of running the marathon.

[...]

In males the body fat mass decreased 2.4 kg, while in females no change in body composition was observed over the 18-month training period.

Yep. Eighteen months of training, and the men lost five pounds and the women lost zilch.

They did, though, all complete the marathon.

Maybe we should remind these left-wing quacks that doctors kill 251,000 people a year due to medical mistakes.

These idiots should try reducing those grim statistics.

What about 'car violence'?

The fact that drunks and druggies cause most of the fatalities should NOT in any way stop us from fighting to STOP CAR VIOLENCE.

People who 'say' they use their cars to drive to work are part of the vast right wing conspiracy. Everyone knows to stop CAR VIOLENCE the STATE must take away citizens cars. ARE YOU for life or death?

The taxpayers should not be paying for propaganda source material to support gun control.

Maybe a team of doctors from Baltimore, Compton and Detroit can help as well. They have nice safe cities, to base their tea search on. Right?

When it’s government funding a “study,” they already have a predetermined outcome in mind.

“One in five deaths is linked to obesity because our public health professionals were so convinced that saturated fat causes heart disease they dying think they needed to wait for actual evidence, and pushed the country into a high carb, low fat diet.

Turns out they were flat out wrong.”

I came close to becoming a statistic based on the above false science pushed by our so called health professionals.

Believing that bs, I developed high blood pressure and was border line diabetic 2.

Then, I had foot surgery and gained 45-50+ pounds with lack of exercise. Then, I developed a heart murmur.

A friend, who had been there before and turned his health around told me to go on a modified paleo diet, avoid carbs and processed food. Then, throw out any food product that said diet or low cal.

Also, I got back to walking as my foot healed. In about 3 months, I lost 35 pounds, and I was able to dc my blood pressure med.

We modified my/our diet to be one where we ate food that we bought on the outer shelves in grocery stores and avoided the processed food inside. I lost 10 more pounds and stabilized over the past year plus.

Then, we went from paleo to a combo of the Med and Dash diets. A lot of fish, poultry, and pork and/or beef once a week with a few eggs a week and a lot of fresh fruits and veggies with meals and as our snacks.

My weight has stabilized at 175, which was my active duty weight 50+ years ago.

BP is a little below normal, and my pulse rate is down to 65-70! Lab values show no more sugar problems.

I still see my cardiologist every two years versus once a year. He shakes his head and says, “If all our patients do what you did, we would work part time.!”

What my wife and I find amazing is how many friends ask how I did it, and they roll their eyes and say they couldn’t do that.

Shouldn’t the CDC be finding a cure to Zika. Say what you want about gun control policy but this isn’t an infectious disease. Maybe we should get the Department of Agriculture to figure out how to fight ISIS.

As a result, he said Dr. Mark Rosenberg lied, “science has been stopped dead in its track for 20 years...”

Actually, Mark - we know for a fact that when only the government has guns, millions of people start getting murdered by the government.

The 20th century proved that fact scientifically and conclusively.

It is a mistake to believe "facts" produced by Democrats. During the Clinton regime, an academic friend of the Clintons conocted a "study". He reviewed hospital records of people in New York who died. He looked for medical "errors" (by his definition). He then asked himself "could this have caused death?" He answered himself "yes" enough times to "estimate" that more than 90,000 deaths per year were caused by medical malpractice across the country. A colleague performed the same study on Colorado data and came up with an "estimate" of more than 40,000.

When two numbers allegedly derived using the same "scientific" method differ by either 50% or 100% (depending which direction you look), no sane person would consider the numbers to signify anything. The Democrats decided to add the numbers together and came up with 130,000. Another Democrat decided to double that number, and came up with 250,000 or so.

In the 2 decades since the "study" was produced, the CDC has not seen fit to include "iatrogenic" (or medical error) as a cause. The major causes are still cancer and heart disease. While there are no doubt some deaths caused by "medical error" (e.g., the janitor in New York who unplugged a life support machine in order to be able to run a vacuum cleaner), there have not been enough to even warrant a category. The Obama regime has had control of the CDC, and the regime is not friendly to the medical profession.

From:

Deaths and Mortality

Number of deaths for leading causes of death:
Heart disease: 614,348
Cancer: 591,699
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 147,101
Accidents (unintentional injuries): 136,053
Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 133,103
Alzheimer's disease: 93,541
Diabetes: 76,488
Influenza and Pneumonia: 55,227
Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome and nephrosis: 48,146
Intentional self-harm (suicide): 42,773

From:

Deaths: Final Data for 2013

Injury mortality by mechanism and intent
In 2013, a total of 192,945 deaths were classified as injuryrelated...
Four major mechanisms of injury in 2013—poisoning, motor-vehicle traffic, firearm, and fall— accounted for 76.3% of all injury deaths.
Poisoning—In 2013, 48,545 deaths occurred as the result of poisonings, 25.2% of all injury deaths ...
Motor-vehicle traffic—In 2013, motor-vehicle traffic-related injuries resulted in 33,804 deaths, accounting for 17.5% of all injury deaths ...
Firearm—In 2013, 33,636 persons died from firearm injuries in the United States (Tables 18 and 19), accounting for 17.4% of all injury deaths in that year....
Fall—In 2013, 31,240 persons died as the result of falls, 16.2% of all injury deaths ...

The study has been used by trial lawyers to wave in the face of juries, resulting in big paydays. No doubt the trial lawyers financed the "study".

Given the greed of trial lawyers and the enormous amounts of money awarded, the number of awards should provide an upper bound to the actual number of cases of malpractice.
From:

29 Statistics on Medical Malpractice Payouts and Lawsuits

Medical malpractice payouts
1. Dollars in payouts: $3.6 billion (3.4 percent less than in 2011)
2. Total payouts for medical malpractice: 12,142 (one every 43 minutes)
3. Payouts resulting from judgments: 5 percent
4. Payouts resulting from settlements: 93 percent
...
Severity of alleged injury in medical malpractice claims
13. Death: 31 percent

In other words, assuming that every award was justifiable and no health care provider was ever wrongly found at fault, there were approximately 3800 cases of malpractice causing death. Of course, the lottery mentality encouraged by outrageous awards and no "loser pays costs" rule means that many of the awards are unjust. Even so, the total number of alleged medical malpractice deaths is less than 40% of the deaths due to drunk drivers (about 10,000 per year).

No doubt the trial lawyers took good care of the academics who performed the original "study". No doubt Bloomberg and company will take good care of anyone who can do a similar "study" on gun violence.

Excellent point.

I’m not afraid of gun research or crime research or any actual scientific research. Because I’m not afraid of the truth, even if I don’t like it.

What I’m not interested in is taxpayer supported generation of leftist propaganda. “Scientific” reports that outright lie, twist the facts, or leave out the parts that don’t support the leftist agenda.

Here are some interesting gun facts you might want to start with:

In 2014 (most recent data I could find), blacks in Chicago made up:

79 percent of all known nonfatal shooting suspects,
85 percent of all known robbery suspects, and
77 percent of all known murder suspects, according to police department data.

Whites were
1 percent of known nonfatal shootings suspects in 2014,
2.5 percent of known robbery suspects, and
5 percent of known murder suspects, the latter number composed disproportionately of domestic homicides.

and in general : http://americangunfacts.com

Actually, I have read about some studies that say violence is contagious. (Freakonomics maybe?) I find it plausible.

But I don’t favor taxpayer funded propaganda masquerading as science that only tells us what the leftist government wants us to hear. I’m also against government-funded “welfare” programs for social “scientists”.

Just remove Black on Black shootings and there would be no real problem. Only 7% vs 93%.
