U.S. Rep. Dave Brat, R-7th, says former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich would be Donald Trump’s smartest choice for a running mate.

In an appearance Tuesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Brat promoted his new book, “American Underdog: Proof that Principles Matter.”

Brat was asked who would be the presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s smartest choice politically for vice president.

“I think Newt,” said Brat, referring to Gingrich, the former Georgia congressman who served as House speaker from 1995 to 1999.

Gingrich is “politically savvy, he’s forward-looking” on innovation and technology, is “always ahead of the curve” and “has more books out than anyone up there,” Brat said...

Rick Santorum wasn’t even elected to the U.S. Senate until 1995. NAFTA was signed by George H. W. Bush and was fully implemented in 1993-94. If he opposed NAFTA, it was at a time when he would never be in a position to do anything about it anyway.

Needs to pick a YOUNGER CONSERVATIVE HAWK Dude like Growdy, Lee, Gohmert, not another older than dirt dude. Side by side they look horrid. Besides Newt has sold himself to the devil RINO establishment.

He can rule out Corker too as Tennesseans don’t trust the RINO. You dig enough and you won’t trust him either.

Senator Jeff Sessions is a Nationalist. I think he would be a great pick.

Although my 1st pick would be Governor Greg Abbott of Texas.

That's like the mayor of Little Rock publicly opposing the use of military force in Iraq.

It is pointless, useless, and only serves to score political points.

My point is he knew it would be a disaster for Pennsylvania at large and his district in particular- hardly pointless now after the impact is plain to see. Who would you like to see as VP?

Pennsylvania was an economic basket-case long before NAFTA was signed. "Free trade" had nothing to do with it. All it did was expand the field of competitors who would be kicking Pennsylvania's @ss up and down the field. They were already losing jobs to North Carolina and Virginia. Now they'd be losing jobs to Canada and Mexico, too.

I'm not wedded to any particular VP candidate, but I would want it to be someone younger than Trump, more politically polished, and a more credible conservative. A female and/or Latino would help insulate Trump from a lot of political attacks.

There was a brief window of time early this spring when a Trump-Cruz ticket looked like it could have been a real winner.

” There was a brief window of time early this spring when a Trump-Cruz ticket looked like it could have been a real winner”

Now this is something we can agree upon.

“Trump needs to select someone who will deliver a key battleground state, or enhance a key demographic.”

Ding ding ding. We have a winner.

Never Newt! Really!? How does he help expand the appeal of a Trump ticket? Makes Trump look weak. “I need Newt to show me the ropes”. Yuk!
