I don’t believe that any specific, formal credentials are required to be considered an historian. Reading his Wikipedia entry I see that he was raised by his grandfather, who wrote three historical novels and inspired his interest in history. Meacham graduated summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa.
Although the Pulitzer Prize is no seal of approval in our conservative book, he did win a Pulitzer in history for his biography of Andrew Jackson. His biography of George H.W. was criticized by people on the left for being too soft on his subject.
He might be a good historian, he might be a mediocre one. But I’d say that people who devote a good part of their lives to researching and writing about history, and have won a Pulitzer for it, are entitled to be called historians.

Ron Chernow’s biography of Hamilton is vastly superior to the former editor of Newsweek’s version.
Intellectual yes...if...and only if...one has degrees in the non demanding majors...such as journalism, “studies” , and climate “science”....and...token quota law degrees from, Harvard and Yale.
