A Firm Place to Stand
June 25, 2016
He lifted me out of the slimy pit; out of the mud and mire, he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.
Psalm 40:2
The historic riverwalk area of Savannah, Georgia, is paved with mismatched cobblestones. Local residents say that centuries ago the stones provided ballast for ships as they crossed the Atlantic Ocean. When cargo was loaded in Georgia, the ballast stones were no longer needed, so they were used to pave the streets near the docks. Those stones had accomplished their primary jobstabilizing the ship through dangerous waters.
The days in which we live can feel as turbulent as the high seas. Like sailing ships of old, we need stability to help us navigate our way through the storms of life. David faced danger as well, and he celebrated the character of God for providing him with stability after he had endured a desperate time. He declared, He lifted me out of the slimy pit; out of the mud and mire, he set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand (Ps. 40:2). Davids experience was one of conflict, personal failure, and family strife, yet God gave him a place to stand. So David sang a hymn of praise to our God (v. 3).
In times of difficulty, we too can look to our powerful God for the stability only He brings. His faithful care inspires us to say with David, Many, Lord my God, are the wonders you have done, the things you planned for us (v. 5).
My hope is built on nothing less than Jesuss blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesuss name. On Christ, the solid rock, I standall other ground is sinking sand. Edward Mote
When the world around us is crumbling, Christ is the solid Rock on which we stand.
Psalm 40 is a beautiful song of thanksgiving to God for His deliverance. The key to understanding and appreciating this psalm is seen in the simplicity of the opening words. David knows and celebrates the deliverance of the Lord because he waited patiently for Him (v. 1). In our times of trial and struggle, we want to be delivered quickly and in ways that are simple to see. But David reminds us that Gods deliverance comes in Gods timing. We, like David, must wait patiently for the Lord if we are to see His wonders (v. 5).

SEATTLE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL PREVIEWThis July we have our annual festival of three concerts per week for four weeks with some of the best musicians in the game. The concerts are broadcast live over KING-FM in Seattle, which has a national following thanks to the miracle of the Internet. If youre listening for me, Ill be sitting in the last row in the back because thats where the acoustics are best.
BERNSTEIN: CLARINET SONATAThis July 18 performance features Anthony McGill on clarinet and Adam Neiman on piano. Adam in operating out of Chicago these days, and he has actually read our book on Atlas Shrugged.
Leonard Bernstein is best known for his years at the helm of the New York Philharmonic and his Young Peoples Concerts broadcast on CBS television. But he was also a prolific composer. This sonata for clarinet and piano dates from 1941 when Lenny was just starting out; its his first published piece.
The first movement is a lyrical grazioso, opening with a musical line reminiscent of Hindemith and hinting at Copland.
The second movement begins andantino in 3/8 and moves into a fast vivace a leggiero after a tranquil opening. This movement is predominantly in 5/8 but also changes between 3/8, 4/8 and 7/8 throughout with a walking bass and syncopations. Later the more reflective mood of the first movement recurs, with a Latin-infused bridge before finishing in a flourish.

Good evening, Publius!
Good to see you tonight.
I like West Side Story and Candide, but not much else of Leonard’s compositions, I’m afraid.
I hope that doesn’t make me a Philistine! :-)

SEATTLE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL PREVIEW
SHOSTAKOVICH: STRING QUARTET #3 IN F, OP. 73This July 18 performance features Augustin Hadelich and David Chan on violins, Yura Lee on viola and Ronald Thomas on cello. Ron is married to violist Cynthia Phelps.
At the end of World War II, Dmitri took a shellacking from the Communist Party brass for his formalism in writing his Ninth Symphony. To avoid further problems with Stalin and his commissars, his Third String Quartet was laid out in the form of a story with each movement bearing a title.
The first movement, marked allegretto, is titled, Blithe ignorance of the future cataclysm. Its in sonata format, a Russian tune with Dmitris biting dissonances, which add a sardonic humor to the scene. The second subject is another Russian folk tune. Development turns to the minor but is dispelled by the recap. Things turn a bit strident at the end, but it finds a way to end happily.
The second movement is marked moderato con moto, and is titled, Rumblings of unrest and anticipation. This is a movement full of dreadful undercurrents, and its not quite a scherzo.
The third movement is marked allegro non troppo, and is titled, Forces of war unleashed. Artillery fire starts a major battle. Tanks roll and armies march. Its a musical description of carnage.
The fourth and fifth movements are joined. The fourth movement is marked adagio and is titled, In memory of the dead. This is a threnody to those 30 million who lost their lives in the Great Patriotic War. Their bones still turn up today in Russian farmers fields.
The sense of mourning is replaced by a sense of rhythm. The fifth movement is marked moderato, and is titled, The eternal question: Why? And for what? The question is asked in 3/4 time and F Major. The humor disappears, and things turn deadly serious in the middle. The cello turns it around, and the sardonic humor returns. It winds down for a pensive end.
