What Will Gun Controllers Do When Americans Ignore an ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban?
reason.com ^ | June 21, 2016 | J.D. Tuccille

Posted on 06/21/2016 8:03:16 AM PDT by Malone LaVeigh

But in the wake of Omar Mateen's bloody rampage in Orlando, gun control advocates think that overcoming the passionate opposition of firearms owners and imposing a ban on a difficult to define class of "assault weapons" is a swell idea whose time has come. This prohibition will somehow be different.

So, do you suppose they learned that the hard way?

“but I just find it odd with the fast and furious gun walking, the San Bernadino and the Orlando shootings the government was involved or “missed” the opportunity to stop the shootings.”

A jewel of a comment in the thread.

You mistake asymmetric controlled response to the typical insurgent being the equivalent of responding to pissed off citizens, many who know controlled fire bursts.

This isn’t a hard question. What happens with all of the other laws that are in place that we ignore? The law is not there to take guns off the street. The law is there to make you into a criminal. Whether it is guns, drugs, taxes, EPA, EEOC, etc. the laws make you a criminal whether or not they are actively enforced. As a criminal you will modify your behavior, maybe you will not speak so openly, maybe you will not run for public office, maybe you won’t try for certain jobs. And that’s fine by the lawmakers it’s exactly what they want.

Interesting to follow this. The law-n-order Freepers are becoming less vocal. Not too long ago you would be lectured on the don’t worry about the law if you dont have anything to hide (usually applied to red light cameras, drugs, taxes, asset seizure).

I have always liked the bang stick Tom Clancy made in “No Remorse”. Could be put in a cane or umbrella with little or no problem.

There isn’t going to be an “assault weapons ban”.

May I offer the M3 Sub Machine Gun AKA Grease gun. A section of barrel, a piece of exhaust pipe, a piece of cold rolled steel, a spring and some minor skill with an arc welder. Add a magazine and some sheet metal and away you go. An afternoon project for the handy. Even more rudimentary are some of the weapons built by the Mau Mau back in the day.

The WWII Sten is even simpler, and uses a single recoil spring instead of the M3/M3A1's paired springs on guides, and if you don't have tubing handy for the receiver [though 1.5-inch inner diameter electrical conduit works fine] you can simple roll a section of 1/16th-inch sheet metal for a Sten upper, as the Israelis did. Even some Sten barrels were made by cutting diagonal grooves on a rectangular section of sheet steel, then bending it into a tube around a steel mandrel and welding the seam together and then chambering both ends with a 9mm chambering reamer, and cutting the resulting 20-inch tube in half: presto, two new Sten barrels.

When Stens entered really large scale production at the Canadian Long Branch armory in anticipation of their need for the June 1944 D-DAY invasion landings, their final cost was just over six dollars each; the seven magazines issued with each weapon cost more to make than the guns themselves did.

I assume any such ban would include a restriction on ammunition sales.

There's a whole cargo can full of ammo in the parking lot of my local cop shop.

‘Plus, as someone pointed out, many cops are on the posiltive side of the 2A themselves.’

Thats delusional in the extreme. Anyone who thinks the COPs will side w/ gun owners will be very disappointed.

All 80 million+?
That's a lot of door-busting to do all at once.

If I owned real Select Fire Assault Weapon I would ignore it.

I only own a Civilian Semi Auto AR-15, so it doesn’t affect me whatsoever.

Full auto is amateur hour in any sane scenario.

We are not talking about sane times.

I agree that full-chat is best saved for very special occasions, nighttime when other folks are making muzzle flashes, [get yours out quick then move!] when entering a hostile room, ideally after prepping it with a grenade in first, in rain or sleet when sights are more or less worthless, and when a guy with two .50 ammo cans rigged as satchel charges is climbing on the back deck of your tank, has both hands occupied and well away from his clacker hand detonator and you have an M3A1 greasegun in your hands because your tank commander borrowed your .45 autopistol because he could wear it under his poncho. the .45 pistol would likely have done fine, as would a shotgun. But a dozen rounds of .45 in a row worked okay.

If you have two guys with rattle guns, one smart answer is one on semi, one on full. and remember, we're talking a world with a LOT of rookies with no concept of sights, aiming or the slightest rudimentary marksmanship. Shotguns for such are really a better choice, but I promise you there won't be enough to go around, nor enough ammo.

Look at how brave that man standing is, he appears to be showing no fear in the face of all those low-life aholes. No blindfold, looking em right in the eye I hope all those murderers died in the war, but if not, I bet that man tormented them later in life.

But it would have been nicer if he would have shot whoever arrested him.

Ex post facto laws are Unconstitutional

You cannot charge an abortion doctor with a crime if he performed abortions when they were legal.

And similarly, you cannot charge anyone for owning a product bought legally.

“Thats delusional in the extreme. Anyone who thinks the COPs will side w/ gun owners will be very disappointed.”

And that’s only your opinion! You have no more substantiation of your assertion than I do. What I do know is that there is a segment of law enforcement that does believe in the 2A (like Sheriff Clarke of Milwaukee), and it’s my opinion that these men and women will stand with the citizens if push comes to shove.
