BURLINGTON, Vt. When Sen. Bernie Sanders, the now-vanquished Democratic presidential candidate, returns to Capitol Hill to vote Monday, he is expected to be accompanied by his constant traveling companions from the campaign trail: the U.S. Secret Service.
Although Hillary Clinton has clinched the partys nomination, Sanders retains one of the trappings of a top-notch candidate. A team of agents still guards him at his home, where theyve constructed a small watch station on the property. They travel with him on commercial and charter flights and use a motorcade to whisk him through cities he visits. And they recently marched alongside him during a gay-pride event here in his home town after the Orlando shootings.
Such round-the-clock protection can cost taxpayers more than $38,000 a day. And with the potential for the Secret Service to be watching over Sanders through the Democratic convention in Philadelphia five weeks from now, the taxpayers may get stuck with a big security bill long after his campaign receded from the daily cable-news cycle.

Wow! The Socialists at the WaPo are worried about how taxpayer money is being spent? Color me surprised!
Sanders should stick around
There is a good chance of Clinton imploding (even with the entire media on her side, she’s a terrible candidate)
$38,000 a day for a couple of hired guns? Trump can’t take office fast enough.
Any word about the billions that went missing during Hillary’s tenure at the State Department?
This ranks up there with $500 toilet seats.
The meeting a few weeks ago with Obama / Biden....... hmmmmmm. Maaaaaybe.
Think about it. The dem convention has the potential to be even more unhinged than the Republican convention. If Sanders stays in, which means he keeps that security guard, it allows the Secret Service to have more insight into things that could go wrong, and perhaps a better opportunity to head off trouble.
I detest Bernie’s politics (which are almost indistinguishable from Hillary’s)....
but he would make a far superior candidate for the D’s
than Lying Hillary the Coruptess
Hillary has more negatives....and more dirty linen than Hilton Hotels......
and most D’s know it
I am betting they will nominate someone other than Hillary.
They do NOT want to all be dragged down by putting the Old *itch as head of their ticket
They want to stay in power, office, in the money
Hillary! has NOT clinched the nomination! Neither Hillary! or Bernie have enough pledged delegates to win the nomination. BY RULE, superdelegates are NOT pledged and can change their mind at any time, without repercussion, right up until the vote.
If the superdelegates swing from Bernie to Hillary! then Bernie wins. Plain and simple. The powers of the Democrat Party will choose the winner, and that choice will be made at the convention - not before. If Hillary! stumbles bad, then Bernie will have a strong case for support by those superdelegates and we may end up with a Bern-v-Donald contest.
I think old Bernie should stay...have an ‘blast’ of a convention, take down the whole city of Philly and Hilly while your at it!!!
The editor appears to have replaced the word presumptive.
The rat convention and the republican convention will have one thing in common. Rat protesters.
Yeah, no shiite. When did the ComPost worry about taxpayer’s money? These socialist scumbags think govt money comes from trees.
Ridiculous.
and yet all the Occupy nitwits that support Sanders have no problems with this . To them it’s all about the evil ‘Banksters’
[ read : ppl in debt over loans they’ve gotten from banks and now do not want to have to pay back ]
“I am betting they will nominate someone other than Hillary.”
I really, really want to see that meltdown. It will be complete mayhem.
