SEATTLE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL PREVIEW

MOZART: PIANO TRIO IN G, K. 496

This July 13 performance will feature Jun Iwasaki on violin, Efe Baltacigil on cello and Inon Barnaton on piano.

While Haydn invented the piano trio, Mozart contributed his own works to the genre. This is from the mature Mozart, age 30, and from the beginning it sounds like it could have come straight from the opera house.

The first movement is marked “allegro” and is in sonata format. It’s sensible music for sensible people until you hit the development section, which turns to the minor. Peace is restored at the recap.

The slow movement in C Major, marked “andante,” is in ternary format with the central panel in E-flat.

The finale, marked “allegretto,” returns to G Major for a joyous rondo.

Tomorrow night, it’s more previews from Seattle: Kodaly, Mendelssohn, Prokofiev and Schubert.
