There was a small ray of hope just after the Lehman collapse that one of the most lamentable characteristics of US society - the relentless urge to build massive McMansions (funding questions aside) - was fading. Alas, as the Census Bureau confirmed this week, that normalization in the innate American desire for bigger, bigger, bigger not only did not go away but is now back with a bang.
According to just released data, both the median and average size of a new single-family home built in 2015 hit new all time highs of 2,467 and 2,687 square feet, respectively.
And while it is known that in absolute number terms the total number of new home sales is still a fraction of what it was before the crisis, the one strata of new home sales which appears to not only not have been impacted but is openly flourishing once more, are the same McMansions which cater to the New Normal uberwealthy (which incidentally are the same as the Old Normal uberwealthy, only wealthier) and which for many symbolize America's unbridled greed for mega housing no matter the cost.
Not surprisingly, as size has increased so has price: as we reported recently, the median price for sold new single-family homes just hit record a high of $321,100.

I never said that. You seem to be jumping to many conclusions here.
Why is this so personal?
Because you presumed to speak for everyone on planet earth. That is generally not well regarded.
But your focus is on cookie cutter McMansions and wooden RVs on wheels. OK. Got it.
Nice going! When you can't defend your position change the subject.
Of course the fact is that once again, you lie.
My focus is not on those things, yours is. You were the one throwing the tiny fisted tantrum that people have the audacity to live in homes you disapprove of.
When people called you on your presumption you attack them.
Good thing that you refute me and speak for everyone on the planet. How well regarded you are!
Nice going! When you can't defend your position change the subject.
Change the subject? Are you Travis Bickle? That was the subject.
Of course the fact is that once again, you lie.
When did I "lie"? And about what?
Do you know what the definition of projection is?
I don't need enemies. I am fair to everyone. You can be my friend as well. Take care.
I have a wooded lot also - my wife and might have (might you understand) entered our hot tub without a towel on occasion.
BTW - I miss New England. Not sure if you live there still. We went back a few years ago to our old stomping grounds. Cambridge, Boston. New Hampshire.
Loved it.
i use 3 lb lard 6.6 oz.lye 14 oz. water and olive oil never measured oo,but i’d say about 1 oz.i have a homade mold i use lined with freezer paper.hope this helps.george
Thanks.
My motto is if you can afford it and you want it build it. America is supposed to be a free country. My personal nightmare is one of those huge boxes on a postage stamp lot but hey everybody doesn’t want 5 acres and a log cabin. :-)
so you are opposed to zoning which limits the % of the lot you can build on? Or the height of a house in a residential district?
Read my post. What does it say about zoning? That’s a rhetorical question but I’ll answer it anyway. “nothing” that’s what it says about zoning. The topic is the size of homes being built not a city council meeting about zoning.
Since you seem to be morphing Libertarian you should be agains’t all zoning laws. I guess you haven’t quite morphed yet. :-)
If I read you correctly you were saying people have a right to build what they want. if I mistook your meaning I apologize. Other wise people collectively join and agree to rules about what they can build near other people. The collective is called a city or county. The rules are put into something cities call zoning. How much of a lot you can iild on is zoning. If you have 1 acre, you cannot build on 1 acre because if all the houses did the neighborhood would be wall to wall houses. Normal people don’t like that. So they set a ZONING rule which says you can built up 60% of your lot or whatever.
Before someone who want to build a large home on a lot, they should check the city ZONING rules to see how much of the lot can be built up. But I disagree with your comment. When you joined the collective or moved into the city you gave up the right to built whatever the hell you want to build.
