With the California primary fast approaching, the media are rolling out their favorite fairy tale about how Republican Pete Wilsons support for Proposition 187 in 1994 was a historic, game-changing error for the GOP, driving Hispanics from the party for good!
Both CNN and MSNBC retold this completely bogus narrative this week. NPR rolls it out once every two weeks.
I along with other people capable of reading election returns have written about this forever. I did most recently in Adios, America, in a chapter titled, I Wrote This Chapter After Noticing How Stupid Rich People Are, inspired by a dinner party I went to in Palm Beach, Florida, the day after Id already turned in my book.
Im writing an emergency book on Trump right now, due today, and liberals wont stop lying about Prop 187 so for this weeks column, Im telling the real story of that initiative, again. Maybe the 700th time is the charm!
In 1994, Gov. Pete Wilson of California was headed for defeat in his re-election bid. He had an abysmal 15 percent approval rating syphilis had a higher approval rating. He ended up pulling out an amazing come-from-behind victory by tying himself to Proposition 187, a ballot initiative that would deny illegal immigrants non-emergency government services.
In the lead-up to the election, the media freely dispensed advice to Wilson, nearly identical to the advice theyre giving Donald Trump today.
Proposition 187, was, in the words of The New York Times, a nativist abomination, xenophobic, and a platform of bigotry, racism and scapegoating. Republicans faced an epic loss unless they repudiated Prop 187 and leapt on the Hispandering bandwagon and pronto.

In 1982, I sat in a phone tank at the top of a tall building in San Diego and bothered people to send money to Pete Wilson.
Can’t remember his first name but one of Gerald Ford’s boys stopped by, but I missed him.
I was good at it, but didn’t really enjoy it. It was satisfying to see Wilson beat Moonbeam.
I think Trump is figuring this out.
Today in Sacramento he cited statistics that show illigals get a $1,000.00 more a month in welfare benefits than citizens.
If he can get that message out to blacks he will get a lot of their votes.
And because illegals ignore a hundred other laws and don’t pay fees and insurance and taxes that Americans do they have a hell of a lot more free spending money available to them than the Americans who compete with them for jobs. It is not uncommon to see an illegal pull out a roll of cash fat enough to choke a horse.
I'm not saying that the proposition shouldn't have passed, just that she leaves out the reason why it's attacked now in her effort to present the a wholly positive picture with plenty of sarcasm for people who disagree with her.
I mentioned the "dynamic, changing system" to say that people need to be aware that measures like this serve as a rallying point for Democrats. It might still be necessary and important to pass the measure, but you can't assume that you're acting in a political vacuum without consequences.
“Ann’s looking at prop 187’s popularity twenty years ago and ignoring the fact that California’s now more Democrat than ever. I agree with her about the value of cutting off benefits to illegals, but she doesn’t give a complete picture of what’s going on.”
Ann has been pointing out the comparativly similar demo make up in the US today VS CA when prop 187 passed. Not that prop 187 would pass in CA today.
”rallying point for Democrats”
It’s a flawed premise assuming all, or even a majority of dems are against restricting immigration and enforcing the law.
GWB was elected governor in 1994. I didn’t realize he got involved in CA matters that year too.
Yeah, Dubya showed his Mexico-first colors all the way back then. He flew out to California like Kemp and Bennett to side with the illegals against grassroots Californians.
And make no mistake, Prop 187 was a purely grassroots effort by little people. We had to fight the Republican establishment as much as we fought La Raza and the hard Left. It was my first education as to how the GOPe is the enemy of the average American.
