Its an incontrovertible fact that millions of lives were saved because President Harry Truman dropped the bomb on Hiroshima. I know because Im one of them. My father enlisted in the U.S. Navy the day he turned 18 in 1945. He finished his basic training as the Allies were preparing for Operation Downfall the code name for the invasion of the Japanese mainland.
Experts predicted it would be ten times bloodier than Iwo Jima. Casualty estimates ran into the millions for both sides.
Lest we forget, Imperial Japan was a ruthless warrior culture whose war crimes rivaled the Nazis. Surrender was not in their cultural vocabulary. At Iwo Jima, the Japanese fought to the death literally committing suicide rather than surrender.
Now imagine how they would have fought for their mainland. It would have been the bloodiest invasion in a long and bloody war.
The War Department had no illusions about this. They ordered the creation of 500,000 Purple Heart medals in anticipation of the casualties.
My dad would have been part of that massive invasion force. God only knows if he would have made it out alive.

Mine too. God bless Harry Truman!
Somebody should explain to Obama that the atom bombs we dropped on Japan were like really, really big drone strikes.
...They ordered the creation of 500,000 Purple Heart medals in anticipation of the casualties....
IIRC the Purple Hearts given out since the end of WWII to today are part of that original
Japan invasion batch. They have an additional place in history.
Mine too.
0bama has ‘Syrian’ teens in NY getting jobs to make drones now....and other ‘Syrians’ coming to live near Ft. Campbell.
Connect the dots.
0bama’s setting up the US to get nuked and invaded thereafter as payback; the invasion forces arrive every minute, with 10,000+ ‘Syrians’ by EOY 2016 alone.
Prayerfully, President Trump will immediately initiate a repatriation program for these and many others that are not assimilating.
My Dad as well.
He apologized for bombing Japan and winning the war. It’s not hard to figure out that he’s not on our side.
I know he wrote it as shot against Nixon, but the lyrics to this old Chicago song seem appropriate today:
“Harry Truman”
America needs you
Harry Truman
Harry could you please come home
Things are looking bad
I know you would be mad
To see what kind of men
Prevail upon the land you love
America’s wondering
How we got here
Harry all we get is lies
We’re gettin’ safer cars
Rocket ships to mars
From men who’d sell us out
To get themselves a piece of power
We’d love to hear you speak your mind
In plain and simple ways
Call a spade a spade
Like you did back in the day
You would play piano
Each morning walk a mile
Speak of what was going down
With honesty and style
America’s calling
Harry Truman
Harry you know what to do
The world is turnin’ round and losin’ lots of ground
Oh Harry is there something we can do to save the land we love
Oh woah woah woah
America’s calling
Harry Truman
Harry you know what to do
The world is turnin’ round
And losin’ lots of ground
So Harry is there something we can do to save the land we love
Oh
Harry is there something we can do to save the land we love
Harry
Harry is there something we can do to save the land we love
My Dad, too. I could have written that article. My parents said it had to be done. Many of their classmates died in the war or came back injured or mentally messed up.
I met a guy this past weekend who was on an aircraft carrier at the end of WWII. I asked him if he was off Okinawa, as that was the last big battle. He said “No, I was off the coast of the Japan mainland, getting ready for the invasion. The then said, without further prompting,”Don’t ever let anyone tell you those bombs didn’t save millions of lives on both sides.”
I was born in New Zealand in 1948..
During the war the Japanese attacked Darwin in Australia and killed people and would go around the islands of New Zealand in submarines, sitting on the deck and taunting the old men who were WWI veterans and now the home guard as they patrolled the beaches... a Jap sub even came up in Wellington Harbor at least once..
Most of our young men were away fighting in Europe or the Pacific and if the Japs wanted to invade us there was nobody to stop them except for the Americans training there...
My father always said that if it wasn’t for the Americans the Japanese would have overrun us and killed the men and I would have had a Japanese father...
New Zealanders were thankful for the Americans and I don’t remember any reproach about bombing Hiroshima or Nagasaki...
This is just the un-American Obama’s idea...
ask the older Chinese or the Pacific Islanders what they think..
This Pacific Islander is thankful Truman decided to bomb the Japanese cities..
And say what you will about FDR, and there are many things to criticize him for. But I for one, am damn glad he was POTUS during the war. I can’t imagine any of his contemporaries being better.
That was a wonderful article.
Obama is a walking talking piece of vomit.
Rivaled the Nazis?far worse.
Approximately 27% of POWs died in Japanese custody.
4% in Nazi Germany custody.
Jan-Feb 1995 issue of Civilization Magazine has a fantastic article “Why We Dropped the Bomb” followed by “The Invasion That Never Happened”.
D-Bag in Chief would have done well to read it.
That’s because Barack HUSSEIN Obama is not an American and he despises this country. I sure will be glad when this ahole is finally gone and the nightmare ends.
Yes, the nuke was horrible, but, it ended the whole thing.
On my father's ship there was total agreement, that no one ever wanted to see anything like that war again.
