A commencement ceremony turned unruly over the weekend when the keynote speaker, María Elena Salinas, one of the most prominent journalists in Spanish-language news in the U.S., underscored the achievement of the Latinos among graduates and made some remarks in Spanish.
Non-Latino graduates and their guests at California State University, Fullertons College of Communications booed the Univision anchor and yelled at her to leave the stage, according to a student who was at the ceremony.
In social media posts following the incident, the Peabody Award-winning journalist said she didnt notice the uproar and chalked it up to "sad racism on the rise."
One person, whose handle is @JakeHolzschuh, responded on Twitter, We were upset that your address was aimed at one ethnicity instead of the whole class. Had nothing to do with racism.
Salinas answered: Unless you're Native American, we are all from immigrant families.
The journalist, who is one of Univisions most prominent anchors, delivered two commencement speeches at Fullerton. One was delivered at the university-wide graduation, where she was given an honorary doctorate, the other at the universitys College of Communications commencement.
In tweets leading up to the ceremonies, Salinas said she was looking forward to addressing the graduates, noting that the university had the largest population of Latino students in the state. The universitys website puts the Latino student population at slightly more than 37 percent.
The second, smaller address was the one that created sparks, according to a first-person account by graduate Denise De La Cruz in the Orange County Weekly.
De La Cruz describes Salinas speech as well received until the anchor became a little too Latino-centric and blatantly anti-Trump.
De La Cruz said that Salinas asked the crowd to repeat some Spanish motivational words after her, parents in the crowd yelled, What about us?

Maybe she should have considered “English as a first language” when giving a speech at an American University ... but being an arrogant fool she never considered it.
Make America Preclovis again ?
I know that in many ways American Indians were treated shamefully during those times, but the full story was much more complex than the "pure, innocent Indians versus the evil, greedy Europeans" tale that is told by liberals.
Some pre-Columbian "Americans" had wheels -- but, they were used for toys, not full-scale transportation devices. It came as a big surprise to me, decades ago, when I saw a toy something like this at a museum in Mexico. The most credible explanation (to me) for why they didn't also have carts, etc. is that wheeled transportation requires roads and other infrastructure. Apparently, it was deemed easier to just pack or drag things through the jungle; rather than build a network of roads.
I take issue with her asinine statement. If you were born in the US, especially if your parents and grandparents were born in this country, you are an American. You have no ties to any other country. Let's stop the insanity. The United States of America is the best damn country on earth. Importing radical muslims, and other ethnicities that don't want to assimilate to become Americans first, only further weakens our country - to the delight of democrats.
Hispandering politicians do it all the time.
The race pimps are losing their grip.
The guy probably just thought you were not being polite-the odds are that he understood English perfectly well, too if it was S/SW Texas...
I learned Norteno Spanish at home as a child as my 2nd language, so I’m bilingual-in W and SW Texas most people do-my family is of Latino ancestry, but people of other ethnicities speak it, too-especially ranchers, truckers, other small business people, etc for business purposes.
The ranchers on the other side of the border that you do business with also speak English. Most illegals are easy to recognize-they do not speak the Norteno dialect we speak in this part of Texas and northern Mexico, but the Spanish spoken in the interior...
MrT5 was of Canadian French ancestry-most of his relatives lived in Quebec-the Quebecois dialect that they-and he-spoke as a second language was nothing like you’d hear in France...
Only by design here because I input my state.
I don’t agree that one’s state comes first. I lived in mexifornia and it sure as hell wasn’t important to me. I was born in Texas but I don’t care to be associated with any border state. Mexico can have them back (already does for the mist part).
The Constitution and founding documents that I admire are federal. Some states are run well, some are run by liberals, some are ruined by illegals. I don’t expect anyone to have allegiance to a state that isn’t performing well. But the concepts in the Constitution are universal and what we should get back to.
I do love Tennessee. And for the most part, she does deserve my loyalty. Which us why we picked her to Go Galt in over many other also-rants. But if she messes up, I won’t feel trapped into being loyal to something that opposes my values.
“I’m not a Texan because I’m an American.
I’m an American because I’m a Texan.
Your State should have your first loyalty.
The nation should be your second loyalty.”
**************************************************
That’s one of the silliest statements I’ve seen on FR and I’ve seen a few...How ‘bout us military brats who had no one state to call their own? Weird....no, I submit we should be loyal to Country first.( I know you have Texas pride and all but seriously, what about Americans like me who have no one single state to call home?)
So she was being rude and disrespectful, then turns around and calls the people who were offended names.
Nice.
The kid gets that. He’s saying g their booing was not race based. It was based on her comments in Spanish.
Now, now...She is just a typical worthless journobitch. Send her to Angola on extended vacation.
It isn’t about the graduates, it is about the parents. There were undoubtedly parents who only spoke Spanish and she wanted to speak to them about pushing their kids to go to college.
Still incredibly racist, though, considering there were undoubtedly OTHER PARENTS in the audience who only spoke Chinese, Korean, Viet Namese, Tagalog, etc. and she intentionally LEFT OUT all of them in addition to all the English-only speakers.
When I graduated Junior college before transferring for my last two years, I didn’t go. The commencement speaker was the then local NBC news anchor... Tom Brokaw.
I’m native American. I’m not an immigrant.
“sad racism on the rise.”
Said the proud Latino...
Bake me a pie, b!tch. I’m proud as punch to be a part of an immigrant family whose nation accomplished what every loincloth-clad tribal couldn’t do for thousands of years and what European monarchies couldn’t do for hundreds.
Can I get a second?
Second!
